City of Kitchener’s leading-edge implementation wins ESRI Canada’s Award of Excellence

April 07, 2009 -- London, ON – ESRI Canada recognized the City of Kitchener with an Award of Excellence at the Regional User Conference in London, Ontario earlier today. John Houweling, Ontario Regional Manager for ESRI Canada presented the award to recognize the city’s recent leading-edge system implementation that integrates Azteca’s Cityworks with Riva Modeling and SAP software.

“The City of Kitchener has made history – this is the first time that these best-of-breed solutions have been integrated to develop an enterprise-wide infrastructure management system,” said John Houweling. “The city worked closely with ESRI Canada, IDS Scheer and Loki Innovations to develop interfaces between the three solutions, and through remarkable teamwork, the project was completed one month ahead of schedule and on budget.”

In 2005, the city identified a need to replace aging financial and infrastructure management systems that were perpetuating inefficiencies throughout the organization. They partnered with IDS Scheer to implement an enterprise-wide solution that included Azteca’s Cityworks, SAP and RIVA software. The three products were amalgamated with existing corporate systems to merge financial and infrastructure data and promote an effective work order cycle.

The city had developed a centralized GIS and IT strategy several years ago that enabled Cityworks to be installed directly adjacent to existing corporate systems. As a result, integration was achieved with payroll, fleet and cashiering systems as well as the corporate database. There are now over 300 users who access the data on a daily basis.

“The implementation has enabled our operations, utilities, engineering and finance departments to work from the same GIS base data,” said Jeff Ham, Manager of GIS and Database Administration, City of Kitchener. “Our staff can now make operational and strategic decisions based on information that is synchronized across all corporate systems.”

Looking forward, the City of Kitchener plans to further enhance their enterprise solution by upgrading to Azteca’s Cityworks Server – a browser based system that leverages ESRI technology to provide capabilities above and beyond a core work management system.
