ROCHESTER, NY – August 21, 2007 – Pictometry International Corp., the worldwide leader in digital, aerial oblique imagery and easy-to-use measuring software systems, announced today that it will present a case study on the integration of GIS and Pictometry’s oblique imagery for emergency and disaster recovery planning in the Atlanta urban area, at the 45th Annual URISA Conference in Washington, DC (August 20 – 23).
In September of 2005 the Atlanta Regional Commission’s (ARC) GIS Division helped with Katrina recovery efforts producing over 200 oblique imagery plots overlaid with GIS data and GPS reference grids in support of the National Guard. ARC’s experience helped get a $200,000 grant partnering with the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Geo-Spatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) to purchase imagery of the Atlanta urban area for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) 133 cities effort. The first project was so successful it resulted in a second grant of $230,000 for 2007 imagery.
Using Pictometry’s imagery resources and ARC’s GIS talent, ARC put together a portable system that provides GIS field support in the event of a major emergency. The system can display and print “E” size plots of oblique imagery overlaid with GIS data and GPS reference grids.
In September, 2006 Atlanta used the system for a federally observed and graded NIMS (National Incident Management System) compliant Command and Control Exercise for the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI).
Pictometry will present on Thursday 23 August 8:30-10:00 AM.
The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) is a non-profit professional and educational association that promotes the effective and ethical use of spatial information for management of urban and regional systems. URISA’s 45th Annual Conference will feature comprehensive workshops, educational sessions and networking opportunities, bringing together professionals from all parts of the spatial data community.
