Being held for 8 consecutive months since March 2018, the event drew together over 1,000 comic creators from across cities in Indonesia, as well as Indonesia's top local comic communities, including Lumpia Komik, Forum Komik Jogja and Komikin Ajah. Thousands of comic creators were chosen on the basis of their appealing visual creativities and stories, from 10 cities in Indonesia, such as Bandung, Yogyakarta, Semarang, Surabaya, Bali, Makassar, Medan, Banda Aceh, Batam, and Tegal.
"We've gone to the forefront of the new pop culture movement, as digital comics now continue to evolve. It surely has a broad appeal to young generation, thus through this event, we aim to attract more local comic creators to get their ideas translated into most attractive story-driven visuals for their audiences," said Borton Liew, CEO of CIAYO Comics. During the roadshow, four selected top comic creators, Sweta Kartika, Yoga Danu, Is Yuniarto and Arief Digidoy, have successfully published their story-driven works to CIAYO Comic digital platform, reaching over 100,000 subscribers.
To increase awareness of digitizing comics, CIAYO Comics have also collaborated with over 300 local comic creators, now adding the numbers to grow over 1,000 through roadshow and face-to-face engagement with community. "This will help us to capture new creative talents from all around Indonesia. Moreover, over half of Indonesia's comic creators were not coming from a big city in Indonesia," said Khrisnawan Adhie, Head of Business Development of CIAYO Corp.
With a total population of more than 260 million, Indonesia is now experiencing a rapid internet penetration growth. In 2017, there were nearly 105 million of people accessing the internet in Indonesia and this figure is projected to grow to up to around 130 million in 2021, according to a research by Statista. "We see new emerging markets for digital comics to grow. In particular, we look our audience, that are now younger, more diverse, and more creative. They penetrate new technology way faster and higher, hence they will access stories from a much wider range of channels than we typically assume of for a comic," added Khrisnawan Adhie.
