2016 NAB Show Creative Master Series Goes Behind the Scenes of the Latest Feature Film and Virtual Reality Content

-- Conference to Host Creative Minds Behind “The Jungle Book,” “Keanu,” “Deadpool,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “The Revenant” and “The Martian VR Experience” --

WASHINGTON — (BUSINESS WIRE) — April 6, 2016NAB Show, the world’s largest annual conference and expo for professionals who create, manage, and distribute entertainment across all platforms, will feature a broad slate of sessions at the Creative Master Series. The conference will provide attendees with an exclusive look into how content creators are exploring new ways of storytelling and of using cutting-edge technology throughout production and post. The convention takes place April 16 – 21 in Las Vegas, with the Creative Master Series spanning April 18-19.

The conference keynote, “ Virtual Reality: Immersive Storytelling Meets Interactive Technology,” will feature Academy Award-winners Kim Libreri, CTO, Epic Games; Robert Stromberg, founder and CCO of The Virtual Reality Company; David Alpert, president, Skybound Entertainment and Academy Award nominee Rob Bredow, CTO, LucasFilm. They will discuss interactive storytelling in virtual reality from both a creative and technological perspective with highlights from their projects: “Bullet Train,” “The Martian VR Experience,” “Gone” and “Star Wars” virtual reality content. The discussion will be moderated by Ted Schilowitz, futurist at 20th Century Fox and CinemaVangelist at Barco.

The Creative Master Series will lead off with “ Cinematography in Space for ‘A Beautiful Planet’.” The session, produced in partnership with American Cinematographer Magazine, will feature Cinematographer James Neihouse, ASC discussing how he worked with NASA to capture exclusive IMAX footage of Earth from the International Space Station to create a totally unique perspective of our planet.

After the keynote presentation, “ Awaken to the Power Behind The Force – The Making of ‘Star Wars’,” produced in partnership with the Motion Pictures Sound Editors society (MPSE), will feature Matt Wood, supervising sound editors at Skywalker Sound; Pat Tubach, visual effects supervisor and James Clyne, visual effects art director, both at Industrial Light & Magic. Moderated by Bryan Bishop, senior reporter at The Verge, the panel will offer a glimpse into how the sound and visual effects teams behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” collaborated to bring more than 2,100 special-effects shots to life on the big screen.

Tuesday, April 19, will begin with “ The Path to the Statues – ‘The Big Short’ and ‘The Revenant’” produced in partnership with American Cinema Editors (ACE). Stephen Mirrione, ACE, editor of “The Revenant,” and Hank Corwin, ACE, editor of “The Big Short,” will talk with moderator Norman Hollyn about the art of editing Academy Award-winning films and shine a light on their often invisible contributions.

On the same day, the conference will take a comedic turn with “ Catnapped! Key and Peele’s ‘Keanu’,” produced in partnership with International Cinematographers Guild (ICG). The film’s Director, Peter Atencio and Director of Photography, Jas Shelton will go behind the scenes of comedy duo Key and Peele’s cinematic debut, which hits theaters on April 29, 2016.

‘The Jungle Book’: New Technology Meets Classic Storytelling” will feature Visual Effects Supervisor and two-time Academy Award winner Rob Legato, ASC, DGA, VES, Producer Brigham Taylor, Postproduction Supervisor, Jonas Thaler and DI colorist Mike Sowa, providing insight into how they melded pioneering virtual production techniques with traditional storytelling and craftsmanship. Their innovative system bridged analogue filmmaking with the latest advances in real-time rendering, playback and color correction. The reimagined Disney classic debuts in theaters on April 15, 2016.

Lastly, “ ‘Deadpool’: Leveraging Technology to Create a Stunning Superhero Film” will host the post-production team behind the surprise smash hit: Vashi Nedomansky , post-production workflow and editorial consultant; Joan Bierman, post supervisor; Jonathan Rothbart, VFX supervisor; and Matt Carson, first assistant editor. The team will delve into the approaches they used to bring one of the most unconventional comic book antiheros to the big screen and also describe the new technology they employed to edit the film at their studio in Los Angeles while production took place in Vancouver, Canada.
