Parade Technologies Introduces DisplayPort™ to HDMI™ 2.0a Protocol Converters

New DP to HDMI 2.0a Converters Enable USB-C™ DP Alt Mode to HDMI Adapters and HDMI 2.0a Output on Motherboards

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — August 10, 2015Parade Technologies, Ltd. (Taiwan OTC:4966.TWO), a leading video display and high-speed interface IC supplier, today announced two new additions to the company’s video protocol conversion product line. The PS175 and PS176 provide conversion from DisplayPort™ 1.2a or DisplayPort 1.3 to HDMI™ 2.0a. The PS175 was developed for mother board applications in portable and desktop systems, and the PS176 was developed for protocol adapters or “dongles”, including DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB Type-C™ to HDMI 2.0a adapters.

Both devices support the maximum HDMI 2.0a data rate of 6Gbit/sec, enabling 4K UHD performance at 60fps and 24 bits-per-pixel color with 4:4:4 color sampling. This 4K UHD HDMI 2.0a performance supported with a DP 1.2a or DP 1.3 input of 4 lanes at the HBR2 (5.4Gbit/sec) link rate. HDCP 1.4 and HDCP 2.2 content protection is provided for both the DisplayPort input and HDMI output, along with the necessary HDCP repeater functionality. Internal conversion to 4:2:0 HDMI output format is provided, as is the ability to handle 8 channels of 24-bit audio at a 192kHz sample rate.

What sets Parade protocol converters apart from other solutions is the ability to perform “jitter cleaning” as part of the conversion process. Intrinsic jitter from the DisplayPort Source and as well jitter ingress and ISI generated jitter from the DisplayPort transmission line can be removed by the PS175 and PS176 during the protocol conversion process. This results in a clean, low-jitter HDMI 2.0a output with generous compliance margin even at the 6Gbit/sec HDMI 2.0a data rate. Because the tolerance for jitter on an HDMI signal is much lower than that allowed for DisplayPort, jitter cleaning during the DP to HDMI conversion process is essential. Jitter Cleaning benefits both HDMI Source compliance as well as HDMI display interoperability, and can also help compensate for low quality or longer HDMI cables.

“Many semiconductor vendors are struggling with the new 6Git/sec sample rate enabled by HDMI 2.0a,” said Jimmy Chiu, Executive VP of Marketing at Parade Technologies. “Providing a robust HDMI TMDS signal at 6Gbit/sec, with ample compliance margin, requires high-speed SERDES expertise that many chip companies don’t have. So the PS175 fills this gap on the motherboard. And with the expected high adoption rate of USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode, the PS176 should provide a robust adapter solution capable of interoperating with various video source, display, and cable types.”

On the DisplayPort input side, the PS175 and PS176 support all the DP to HDMI protocol conversion requirements specified by the VESA DisplayPort Standard, version 1.3, and the VESA DisplayPort Alternate Mode over USB Type-C Standard, version 1.0a. This includes the ability to support CEC-Tunneling-over-AUX.

On the HDMI output side, the PS175 and PS176 support the latest HDMI 2.0a specification, including the SCDC (Status and Control Data Channel), TMDS scrambling, and the CEC receptacle interface.

The PS175 and PS176 include an on-chip microprocessor with an embedded SPI ROM for autonomous operation, requiring no control by the host.

Availability

The PS175 is packaged in a 48 pin, 6x6mm QFN package, which includes the internal SPI-ROM. A 64 pin, 7x7mm TFBGA package is also available, which does not include the SPI-ROM (an external SPI-ROM is needed for operation). Samples are available now.
