Union City, Georgia, March 10 2015 - Union City is working hard to better serve our customers and attract new business to the community. The City’s latest addition is improved technology over the Internet.
The Community Development Department, Public Services Department and eGIS Associates have worked in tandem to deploy a new Geographic Information System (GIS) Web application called ConnectGIS. GIS has been an increasingly popular tool used by all levels of government around the country to enhance the management of municipal information.
Sonja Fillingame, City Manager, highlighted that the “GIS system was the vision of the Mayor and City Council and will aid the business community in planning and analysis for economic development. Businesses using GIS will discover new ways to serve customers and determine locations for bringing new services to the city.”
The new ConnectGIS web application will allow users to search for information based on a parcel ID number (PIN), Owner name, Address, Zoning classification and more. Users will also be able to view different maps or themes including general site maps, planning and development maps, environmental maps and capital project maps. Each map has layers of information specific to its purpose. For example, the planning and development map contains information on Zoning and Land Use. This information will prove useful for the siting of new business in the City. Parcels in the maps are linked back to County Tax data allowing users to retrieve both city and county information from a single location.
The system also allows municipal staff and citizens to more easily access a wealth of information about any parcel of land in Union City such as zoning, capital improvement projects, and utility service areas. Specific property information can be retrieved, such as deed volume and page number, recent sales information, census tract number, and the year a building was built. Information can be accessed from the comfort of your home, computer or mobile device. This will increase the efficiency of overall City operations and increase transparency of those operations to the citizens.
“The ConnectGIS application represents a big step up in the use of modern web technologies and puts Union City in the forefront,” said Cedric Clark, Public Services Director. “It will improve the City’s ability to address the needs of its citizens by making data more easily accessible by all those that need it.”
Sonja Fillingame, points out that “the City’s website receives 6,000 page views a month with people researching a full range of topics from zoning to economic development and quality of life issues. The ConnectGIS web application is sure to increase that number and improve overall functionality of the website.”
The City selected eGIS Associates to implement the new ConnectGIS web application. eGIS Associates, an Esri Silver Business Partner, is a respected GIS and IT service provider based in the Metro Atlanta area. Their team of GIS and IT professionals ensured that the new application was deployed on time and in budget. “We were very excited to work with Union City on this project,” said Tripp Corbin, CEO of eGIS Associates. “The new ConnectGIS web application will allow citizens and staff to quickly retrieve a host of valuable information. This new application is taking Union City to a new level and shows a dedication to provide quality services to the Citizens.”
The new ConnectGIS application can be accessed by City Staff and the public alike using the following web address: http://unioncity.connectgis.com/. The application will work in multiple web browsers including Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, FireFox, and Safari. It is also mobile device friendly and can be accessed using Windows, Android and Apple devices..
