Vice Chairman Aine Brazil to be Recognized for Role in Construction of Greenberg Pavilion at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center
New York, N.Y. – January 8, 2015 – Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, announces that one of its projects, the Greenberg Pavilion at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, has been selected for inclusion in the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation’s (BWAF) upcoming Built by Women in New York City Awards (BxW NYC). Additionally, the firm’s Vice Chairman, Aine M. Brazil, P.E., LEED AP, will be recognized at the BWAF gala on February 26 for her leadership on the project.
Funded through grants given to the BWAF from the New York Building Foundation and the New York Council for the Humanities, BxW NYC honors outstanding structures and built environments around Manhattan, as well as the women responsible for leading the design and/or construction of the project. Winning projects will also be featured in an exhibit at the Center for Architecture in March to coincide with Women’s History Month.

- Brazil has 37 years of experience in the design and construction of high-rise buildings, hotels, hospitals and air-rights projects with long-span transfer systems. She served as the project manager for the firm’s structural design of the Greenberg Pavilion.
- A strong team of women in the architectural and engineering fields worked with Brazil on the project, leading their respective disciplines. The group included Susan Niculescu and Constance P. Hildesey of HOK, Ellie Dalton and Dorothy Lloyd of TCA, and Marina Dishel of Syska Hennessy Group.
- The project included the 800,000-square-foot addition of a 12-story air-rights transfer structure, and renovation of the existing 23-story hospital building. It also included the demolition and reconstruction of the existing Payne Whitney Clinic and expansion of the Stitch Wing.
- Brazil has served as the first president of the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY), was named one of New York's 100 Most Influential Women in Business by Crain's New York Business in 1999 and was honored as a Woman of the Year by WX New York Women Executives in Real Estate in 2006.
- She was also a member of the Mayor’s Commission on adopting the International Building Code as the basis for the 2008 building code for the City of New York.
- Brazil holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from University College, Galway, Ireland and a master’s degree in engineering from Imperial College of Science and Technology in London.
