nanoBEE™ - First 5G RRH Prototyping Platform Meeting 3GPP Specs

Open Design Flow Supports HDL, C, MATLAB

FREMONT, Calif., Dec. 8, 2014 — (PRNewswire) —  BEEcube Inc., communication systems experts and leading provider of advanced communication R&D prototyping platforms, announced the launch of nanoBEE. nanoBEE is an FPGA-based platform with an integrated 3GPP radio that operates across most LTE bands. It is a prototyping platform for cellular Remote Radio Heads (RRH) or User Equipment (UE), allowing algorithmic exploration of MIMO (supports 2x2 and 4x4), air interfaces, network interfaces, Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP), C-RAN and other advanced algorithms. Targeting this platform is done using industry standard design flows of MATLAB and Simulink, C (Vivado-HLS), VHDL, and Verilog, allowing for easy inclusion of custom algorithms and legacy code.

David Hawke, Director of Xilinx's Wireless Marketing, reports, "5G is the next big frontier in wireless, where we are beginning to see customers needing to do rapid prototyping of the new candidate air interfaces. The nanoBEE platform containing high performance RF coupled with the Xilinx Zynq-7000® All Programmable SoC combines high speed signal processing and connectivity, with dual ARM CortexA9 processors. Having a flexible platform with these capabilities is an ideal vehicle for next generation wireless systems."

Ken Karnofsky, Marketing Director at Mathworks, states, "We have worked closely with BEEcube to provide a tightly integrated hardware/software environment that accelerates LTE and 5G R&D. This workflow combines the flexibility of LTE waveform generation and simulation in MATLAB and Simulink with the high-performance, LTE-optimized nanoBEE prototyping platform. With the combined solution, wireless engineers can rapidly develop and validate next generation concepts, and quickly target and test designs on the FPGA-based radio.

nanoBEE is well positioned to be the prototyping platform of choice for anyone needing a 3GPP compliant radio platform. Applications include RRH, femtocell, micro access points, next-generation Wi-Fi applications, LTE and LTE-A. Current orders include major telecom suppliers, leading researchers and global 5G wireless consortiums. Base units are under $10,000 with first shipments in 2014.
