International Union of Architects select AIA Member, Thomas Vonier, FAIA, as New Secretary General

Washington, D.C. – August 21, 2014 – Thomas Vonier, FAIA, 2014-15 AIA Vice President was elected Secretary General of the International Union of Architects (UIA) during the 2014 World Congress and General Assembly in Durban, South Africa.   Vonier will head operations for the Paris-based organization that represents 1.3 million architects worldwide through 124 national member sections for a three year term.

"This body has great potential to wield global influence on humane urbanization, improved human habitat and more responsible development,” said Vonier."The UIA's stature as the only world organization of architects also gives it the possibility of tackling global issues in architecture -- and the responsibility to do so."

Vonier plans to streamline UIA governance, improve its communications, and expand its reach. Vonier runs a consulting practice in Paris and Washington, D.C. The founder and past president of AIA Continental Europe from 1994 to 1995, Vonier served on the AIA Board of Directors representing the AIA International Region from 2010-2012.

“Tom is a tremendous leader that will elevate the UIA in stature and efficiency,” said Robert Ivy, FAIA, AIA EVP/CEO. “His skills and knowledge will be well utilized and the architectural organizations of the world will benefit immensely.”

Established in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1948, the UIA is recognized as a non-governmental organization by the United Nations. It works on matters of professional and public interest through three permanent commissions and various work programs. It is chartered to unite architects internationally, without regard to nationality, ethnicity, or political viewpoint.

“We congratulate Tom on his election to Secretary General,” said AIA President, Helene Combs Dreiling, FAIA. “This exciting news will benefit architects across the globe.”
