“The accelerating pace of change in telecommunications, particularly in mobile, is marked by the development of new technologies, business models and market entrants and is leading to a growing skills and knowledge gap within regulatory authorities around the world,” said Anne Bouverot, Director General, GSMA. “By leveraging insights and knowledge of the market to develop a structured and scalable capacity building programme, the GSMA will deliver a material improvement in the quality of regulatory decision-making. We’re excited to be partnering with Multimedia University of Malaysia to launch this graduate programme in Asia, one of the most dynamic and rapidly growing mobile markets globally.”

“As part of Telekom Malaysia’s initiative to further develop the ICT industry in the nation as a whole, MMU serves to fulfil the nation’s human resource needs as it grows into a knowledge economy,” said Dato’ Sri Dr. Halim Shafie, Chairman, Telekom Malaysia and Chairman, MMU. “MMU’s role as a research university also benefits the nation’s ICT industry, as we are a creator and not just a consumer of technology. The new Masters programme that we are undertaking with the GSMA is an important addition to our curriculum and will help executives to build knowledge of the critical regulatory and technology issues that are shaping the increasingly converged fixed and mobile industries.”

The jointly developed graduate programme will provide a comprehensive understanding of contemporary regulation theory and emerging regulatory practice models, as well as business and technology trends relevant to the communications sector. The course is designed to enable mid-level to senior executives in national regulatory agencies, ministries and operator companies in the Asia Pacific region to gain relevant knowledge and skills. Further, it will facilitate closer regional interaction between the key stakeholders so that new ideas and thinking can be developed to ensure the continued growth of the communications sector and its long-term contribution towards social and economic progress.

With three campuses in Malaysia (Cyberjaya, Melaka and Nusajaya), MMU provides university-level education and training in the areas of multimedia technology, engineering, information technology, creative multimedia and business management. The Masters course in Converged Telecommunications Policy and Regulation will be offered at the University’s Cyberjaya campus beginning in the 2016 academic year.
