Architects Issue Statement of Support for Storm-Ravaged Areas Across South, Midwest

Washington, D.C. – April 30, 2014 – The American Institute of Architects (AIA) today issued the following statement on the damage wrought by the massive tornados that have struck across a wide swath of Midwest and Southern states, including Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Alabama. Please attribute to AIA President Helene Combs Dreiling, FAIA:

“On behalf of the AIA, and the AIA’s national Disaster Assistance Committee, I want to extend our concern, thoughts and prayers to people affected by the devastating storms throughout these states.

“I know AIA Alabama, AIA Arkansas, and AIA Mississippi members will be on the front line of those who generously reach out to provide comfort and help. That is who we are. And I know we have an important role to play in helping communities rebuild in ways that are more resilient to natural disaster. The AIA is already working closely with our partners at Architecture for Humanity to coordinate the energy and resources of the architectural profession, and we are committed to designing more resilient communities through architecture.

“For the moment, though, it is time for search and rescue. And we hope and pray those efforts are successful.”
