GainSpan Announces New Family of Application Development Kits based on GS2000 Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n Chip

Smartplug reference design first available

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 19, 2014 — (PRNewswire) — GainSpan® Corporation, a leader in low-power Wi-Fi for the Internet of Things (IOT), today announced a new family of Application Development Kits (ADKs) built on its new GS2000 Wi-Fi/ZigBee chip. The new ADKs leverage the higher data rates and high speed serial interfaces such as SDIO offered by the GS2000 SOC. The new family will enable a whole slew of IOT applications including full HD resolution video streaming, high fidelity music streaming, smart home automation, wearables, and low power sensor based designs.

The first member of the ADK family to be launched is the Smartplug ADK, a reference design for a device that lets users control electrical loads and accurately measure power consumption of household electrical appliances either locally or remotely, using a PC or an iOS or Android smartphone, or through the cloud. A key feature of the GS2000 Smartplug ADK is the GS2000 on-chip16-bit Sigma Delta ADCs used for voltage, current, and power measurement. This feature reduces the bill-of-material of a smartplug by eliminating the cost of an additional power measurement chip.

The Smartplug Kit
The Smartplug ADK includes smartplug hardware, complete hardware design package and software suite with reference source code for the smart plug embedded application and iOS and Android based mobile applications.  A Smartplug Application Evaluation Kit (AEK) is also available that provides a binary version of the software and can be used to evaluate and demonstrate smartplug operation.

The Smartplug hardware includes a standard socket, single-phase 100-265V, 10A plug which uses GainSpan's GS2100M Wi-Fi module. The embedded software runs on the Wi-Fi module and offers complete Wi-Fi functionality including networking stack and services and wireless security. It supports mDNS/DNS-SD based device and service discovery, allowing users to automatically discover and connect to the embedded Smartplug profile. It also supports connectivity to the cloud and works with the GainSpan Home Energy Management System mobile app that allows control of multiple smartplugs. The embedded software also includes provisioning software for configuration of the Wi-Fi module in Limited AP or Client modes and for over-the-air firmware upgrades. The smartplug mobile application for iOS and Android devices supports load control, and displays and charts the current, voltage and power measured over time.

"We will be introducing several ADKs in the next 60 days that will cut our customer's product development time by several months," said Bernard Aboussouan, vice president of marketing, GainSpan. "And more features will be enabled over time on each ADK, building on the extensive capabilities of the GS2000 chips and modules."
