Spatial Roundtable Focuses on DOT Asset Management

Online Forum Asks if GIS Promise Can Live up to DOT Asset Management Reality

Redlands, California—August 5, 2010—Leaders in the transportation and geospatial industries are coming together at the Spatial Roundtable to discuss the use of geographic information system (GIS) technology for department of transportation (DOT) asset management strategies. Esri's global transportation industry manager, Terry Bills, leads the conversation by stating, "The promise of GIS-based asset management—an approach that strives to provide the best return on every dollar invested—is yet to be realized in most state DOTs."

The Esri-sponsored Spatial Roundtable opens the discussion to all parties with a stake in DOT asset management and geospatial technology when Bills asks the question, "What can the GIS community do to fill the gap between GIS promise and DOT asset management reality?" The question went live on July 21 and has already attracted opinions and responses from industry experts.

Spatial Roundtable is designed for industry thought leaders to share their points of view about concerns, trends, challenges, and technologies. Participants in the online Spatial Roundtable discussion include the main contributor, who initiates the discussion, and invited topic-expert guests. Site visitors may also add comments. Topics remain open for discussion for six weeks. Archived topics are accessible for 24 months.
