New Mexico State University Receives In-Kind Software Grant from Siemens PLM Software

PLANO, Texas, July 12, 2010 - Siemens PLM Software, a business unit of the Siemens Industry Automation Division and a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, and New Mexico State University (NMSU) today announced the second largest in-kind corporate contribution ever received by the university. The in-kind software grant from Siemens PLM Software, with a commercial value of $27.5 million, was presented to the NMSU College of Engineering.

The in-kind grant will enrich NMSU College of Engineering curriculum, providing advanced hands-on training to students preparing to enter the workforce following graduation. The range of software includes Teamcenter® software, Siemens PLM Software’s digital lifecycle management solution and the world’s most widely used PLM portfolio; Tecnomatix® software, Siemens PLM Software’s best-in-class digital manufacturing solution; NX™ software, Siemens PLM Software’s comprehensive digital product development solution; and Solid Edge® software, the core CAD component of the Velocity Series™ portfolio, a comprehensive family of solutions addressing PLM needs of the mid-market.

“We will incorporate the use of this software into the industrial engineering curriculum,” said Edward Pines, industrial engineering department head. “It will also be used by mechanical engineering students for senior design courses and possibly some graduate research projects.”

“The software will essentially allow students to research manufacturing processes, such as how do you make a part, how do you assemble a product, what is the best way to design a plant,” added Pines. “We anticipate that our graduates will be more competitive in the global marketplace due to their experience with this state-of-the-art technology.”

“Siemens PLM Software provides NMSU access to PLM technology, which otherwise would be out of reach for the academic community, giving students a distinct advantage by being able to use the same PLM technology widely-used by leading multi-national manufacturing companies around the globe,” said Rich Ramsey, vice president, Partners & Components, Siemens PLM Software. “The experience gained in the use of these tools better prepares students for today’s highly-competitive manufacturing jobs requiring full knowledge of modern technologies and tools.”

The award was made via the Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education (PACE), a joint philanthropic initiative of General Motors, Hewlett-Packard, Siemens PLM Software, and Sun Microsystems. The group has worked together since 1999 to support key academic institutions worldwide with computer-based engineering tools to prepare mechanical designers, engineers and analysts with the skills to compete in the future.

A PACE contribution in 2007 valued at $112.7 million is the largest in-kind corporate contribution ever made to NMSU. NMSU is part of the PACE collaboration, which now includes 49 strategically selected universities around the world.
