Spatial solution is just the ticket for holiday isle

May 18, 2010 — NGIS Australia has delivered a sustainable solution for the effective management and conservation of Rottnest Island, a world renowned tourism island on the West Coast of Australia with one of the world’s largest populations of protected quokkas*.

The Perth-based geospatial consultancy worked closely with the Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) to tailor a holistic and modern management system incorporating technology to help safeguard the island’s environmental and cultural heritage.

The ‘fit for the purpose’ package began with the development of a central information platform, capable of optimising a smart mix of spatial technologies to connect multiple sites for information to be viewed, recorded, edited and stored by employees anywhere on the island, at any time.

“Rottnest possessed a wealth of spatial information and recognised it lacked a platform to adequately manage, share and connect day-to-day activities across the island, and provide for the long term future,” said Paul Farrell, Managing Director for NGIS Australia and Chairman of the Australian Spatial Industries Business Association.

“We were able to help identify, assess and forecast the needs of the island and its resources and then deliver the best available solution – on time and within budget.”

Island employees daily view and update information systems, ranging from records of indigenous sites and geological areas at risk to accommodation unit locations and registered boat moorings.

NGIS Australia selected the spatial engine GeoSamba Universal as the preferred software to deliver map-based information to RIA staff via intranet, together with OpenSource desktop GIS and MapWindow for ease of use, rich functionality and the cost-effective management of capital and ongoing costs.

*Quokkas are pint-sized marsupials, native to Rottnest Island, and found only in a few areas of Western Australia.
