MIPS Technologies Licenses MIPS32® Architecture to Altera Corporation

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — October 13, 2009 — MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer, home networking, wireless, communications and business applications, today announced that Altera Corporation licensed its MIPS32® architecture, marking the entry of the MIPS® architecture into the FPGA channel.

"The MIPS architecture is firmly established within many networking, communications and multimedia systems, and our decision to license the MIPS32 architecture allows us to provide more options for FPGA customers in these markets," said Vince Hu, vice president of product and corporate marketing, Altera.

Art Swift, vice president of marketing, MIPS Technologies, added, "We are excited that Altera is employing the MIPS architecture to offer a wider range of solutions to designers. This license has the potential to broaden MIPS' user base, expand our already broad ecosystem and further proliferate the MIPS architecture."

According to Joseph Byrne, senior analyst for The Linley Group and co-author of A Guide to CPU Cores and Processor IP, "MIPS Technologies' processor cores have long been known for their high performance for a wide range of consumer multimedia, networking and communications applications. The company's technology is already an industry standard for ASICs used in these applications. By joining forces with Altera, a leader in the FPGA market, there is great potential for much more widespread adoption."
