TeleCommunication Systems Releases TCS People Locator

Provides Wireless Consumers “Peace of Mind,” Knowing Where Family and Friends Are via Secure Location Sharing Service

ANNAPOLIS, MD and San Diego, CA (CTIA International CTIA WIRELESS I.T. & Entertainment, booth #201) – October 7, 2009 – TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a leading provider of mission-critical wireless communications, today announced the immediate availability of TCS People Locator, a new application that enables carriers to offer a high-demand Location-Based Service (LBS). TCS People Locator™ provides consumers with the option to securely share their location with family and friends as well as access other location-based information such as points of interest. This application launched in a major US carrier in September.

A unique feature of TCS People Locator is the capability for consumers to create Geo-zones that alert them when a family member or friend has entered or exited a particular geographic area (e.g. school, home, nearby location). TCS People Locator enables parents to securely monitor the whereabouts of their children, for safety, scheduling, and other purposes. Families can share location to assist with child care or group activities, and friends can securely share location with other friends. Consumers can also locate lost phones using the same application.

TCS People Locator provides consumers with the flexibility to manage location alerts via the mobile Web or PC and to receive notifications based on personalized Geo-zones. In addition, consumers can create scheduled location alerts based on preset calendar requests. The application allows consumers to locate multiple handsets and view them on a Web-based map via a PC or laptop. This application’s client-side Geo-zoning design is also a benefit to wireless carriers, reducing expensive network overhead and location requests.

“Our company develops practical and easy-to-use location-based applications that wireless carriers can offer to improve their customers’ quality of life,” said Drew Morin, Chief Technology Officer of TCS. “TCS People Locator provides users with a secure service that enables them to stay connected with friends and family members. It goes beyond basic social networking by providing the flexibility to schedule location requests or trigger notifications when someone enters or leaves a geographic area or zone such as a home, school, park or other specific area. The need for locating friends or loved ones is a basic human need. This application provides peace of mind in an easy to use, familiar way.”

TCS has made a substantial commitment in resources to wireless location based technology, having invested over $140 million in the development of platforms and applications. Earlier this year, TCS acquired LocationLogic, formerly part of Autodesk. According to ABI Research, a market intelligence company specializing in global connectivity and emerging technology, TCS is the second largest vendor of LBS infrastructure in the world. ABI Research predicts LBS infrastructure revenues will increase to $2.2 billion by 2013.
