3D Laser Mapping Launches StreetMapper Portable

September 22, 2009 -- UK based 3D Laser Mapping has launched a portable version of the world’s most accurate mobile mapping system StreetMapper. Small enough to check in as standard luggage at the airport and designed to be installed in a matter of minutes on virtually any vehicle StreetMapper Portable is ideal for rapid deployment to inhospitable or inaccessible environments. Utilising the latest laser scanning technology to achieve sub centimetre accurate measurements at normal traffic speeds StreetMapper Portable is easy to use with a dedicated touch screen LCD display and mission control and route planning software.

“The innovative design of StreetMapper Portable builds on the proven technological performance of StreetMapper 360,” commented Dr Graham Hunter, Managing Director of 3D Laser Mapping. “We have managed to integrate all the functionality of the most accurate mobile mapping system in a fully portable, easy to use, easy to deploy solution.”

Utilising StreetMapper 360 technology StreetMapper Portable combines flexibility and ease of use with proven performance and accuracy. Specifically designed for the rapid 3D mapping of highways, runways, railways, infrastructure and buildings using vehicle-mounted lasers StreetMapper systems capture every detail along the highway corridor including barriers, gulleys and overhead wires, enabling surveyors to create highly accurate 3D computer models for planning, maintenance, wide load route assessment and post-incident investigations.

StreetMapper Portable offers a 360-degree field of view from the vehicle mounted laser scanners, with a range of 300m, a capacity of 300,000 measurements per second per sensor and a recorded average difference of 5 millimetres and a standard deviation of 8 millimetres between measured and control points. By taking advantage of the latest V-Line range of scanners from Riegl, 3D Laser Mapping has combined new, higher performance sensors with Riegl’s trademark reliability, robustness and ease of use. The V-Line range also offers internal waveform processing to record unlimited returns per laser pulse and complete digital processing. An integrated high resolution digital camera can also be included for the capture of still or video images of the survey tract.

The onboard navigation system includes a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) receiver, a fibre optic gyro based Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and the latest Direct Inertial Aiding (DIA) to assist in areas of poor GPS reception. StreetMapper is the only system on the market to offer this level of precision navigation, which has been proven to increase the speed with which the GPS receiver gets back to high positional accuracy after a loss of signal by up to 5 seconds.

“As a leading developer of laser scanning solutions it is imperative that we listen and respond to our customers,” continued Dr Hunter. “StreetMapper Portable was developed in response to a need for a portable system that could be mobilised to locations around the world. We understand that while the dedicated survey vehicle (StreetMapper 360) is very efficient and accurate, it does not meet all the needs of the global market for survey services”
