ARM Announces 10 Billionth Mobile Processor

February 23, 2009 — WHAT: At the 2009 GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, ARM announced that has ARM® Partners have shipped 10billion ARM Powered® processors to the mobile device market – the equivalent of 2.5 ARM processors for every mobile cellular subscriber in the world.[1]

With the 10 billionth processor shipped, ARM has emerged as the architecture of choice for mobile devices and can be found in devices as diverse as Ultra Low Cost Handsets through to Smartphones, MIDs and now Netbooks. In the late 1990s, GSM phones began to shrink to pocket-sized devices with excellent battery life – in part this was due to the market widely adopting the ARM7™ family of processors. With each new generation of ARM processors, there have been corresponding increases in functionality, fun and user experience. The 2009 Mobile World Congress is an important one for ARM and its Partners as the latest Cortex™ family of processors are at the heart of new, exciting web-centric products such as the Palm Pre and Toshiba TG-01 handsets, Netbooks and Hybrid PCs. It is also the event where we can show the next-generation Cortex-A9 MPCore™ multicore processor for the first time running Symbian OS, demonstrating that increases in power-efficient performance can be obtained by having clusters of Cortex family processors working together on a single chip.

The average mobile phone shipped in 2008 had approximately two ARM technology-based processors. More complex Smartphones often have four or five; functioning not only as application processors, but also in the modem, WLAN, GPS, SIM, camera module and Bluetooth ICs. ARM’s partnership of more than 500 Connected Community members includes 200 silicon Partners who shipped 126 ARM Powered chips per second last year, including the silicon in nearly every device on show at Mobile World Congress.
