OPEN MIND Displays High-Performance CAM at IMTS in Booth D-3312

hyperMILL®: The comprehensive CAM solution for flexible production

Livonia Michigan, 18 August 2008 - OPEN MIND Technologies will present its recently released hyperMILL® version 9.7 SP2 CAM solution at IMTS in Booth D-3312. hyperMILL applies to broad industry sectors with product functions that focus on milling, drilling, and turning, including production engineering, mold and die, and medical applications. From efficient 2D machining with automatic feature recognition to safe 5-axis simultaneous milling, hyperMILL® can flexibly and reliably produce the widest ranges of high quality components.

IMTS is the biennial trade fair, sponsored by AMT for the automation and manufacturing technology industries. At IMTS 2008, OPEN MIND will present its flagship hyperMILL product, including the newly released hyperMILL in SolidWorks and recently upgraded hyperMILL for Autodesk Inventor 2009. No matter the CAD platform, hyperMILL is applied to many industries including some current focus areas of production engineering, mold and die, and medical applications. In addition to staffing OPEN MIND's booth in the Lakeside Pavilion, OPEN MIND will support many partners with machining demonstrations, and also have people and presentations within the booths of some partners: DMG (A-8501), Mori Seiki (A-8400), and Seco Tools (F-2247).

hyperMILL® integrated solutions
OPEN MIND has a long history of providing integrated CAM solutions. These solutions work within the partner CAM environment and allow concurrent operation in CAD and CAM systems. As such, there is no loss of data and users can work in a familiar system.

With this background, OPEN MIND added hyperMILL in SolidWorks recently. Though new to the market, this product contains the full maturity of hyperMILL, and OPEN MIND's long experience of providing integrated solutions. This proposition allows OPEN MIND to focus on development of CAM solutions exclusively. hyperMILL contains machining strategies, including 5-axis techniques and CNC postprocessors wholly written by our development staff. And we give users the opportunity to work with strong CAD systems, whether our native hyperCAD (based on the think3 kernel) with a powerful surface/solid/hybrid foundation, or the popular mainstream products SolidWorks®, Autodesk® Inventor™, and Pro/ENGINEER® Wildfire™.

hyperMILL® in production engineering
Reliable, efficient, powerful: OPEN MIND's intelligent CAM software offers all of the necessary features for time-saving processes in production engineering. hyperMILL® offers a comprehensive range of CAM strategies for flexible production including all key 2D and 3D machining strategies and very wide set of drilling strategies, indexing solutions, 5x simultaneous milling, and mill turn support. Users can automatically recognize geometry features in the model and match them with stored and proven machining processes to created highly efficient programming procedures.

hyperMILL® in mold and die, and tooling manufacturing
Machining of jobs with short delivery requirements, and design variations that reflect a family of parts or a customer change order are increasingly common occurrences. Utilities in hyperMILL® including its Rapid Result technology are perfect for achieving cost-effective production. The integrated versions of hyperMILL in hyperCAD®, SolidWorks, and Autodesk Inventor automatically recognize model changes and flags the user that existing calculated instructions should be recomputed. User inputs are also checked for consistency to avoid errant calculations. This facilitates quick changes without having to start the entire programming process anew, providing maximum flexibility in mold and die, and tooling applications.

hyperMILL® also guarantees flexibility and high quality across a broad spectrum of strategies, including advanced machining strategies such as high speed cutting, hard milling, and powerful 5-axis rest machining. For demanding geometries such as deep cavities with steep walls and in some cases also with undercuts regions, 3D machining is not practical because of collisions - or it is only possible with high aspect ratio tooling. With OPEN MIND's 5-axis machining solution, these areas can be machined with relatively short cutters and without collisions. Solutions support 3+2 machining, simultaneous 5-axis machining, and a hybrid process called automatic indexing.

The intention of providing a wide range of machining strategies is to allow end-users to identify desirable machining processes purely from a manufacturing perspective, and then have the software enable these approaches.

hyperMILL® in the medical sector
Products in the medical industry also profit from the high production quality offered by hyperMILL®. Many medical applications require machining of hard metals with high surface finish that is crucial for the compatibility of implants to the human body. Additionally, parts are often custom built to improve the fit and function for each customer. hyperMILL®'s 5-axis technology enables the use of shorter and therefore more stable tools. Improved cutting conditions, less risk of chatter and tool breakage all translate into better milling results. This also reduces tool wear so that machining can be performed with consistent precision.

5-axis simultaneous machining avoids approach and retraction marks, and wasted air time that is typical with 3+2 machining. Advanced hyperMILL processes such as 5-axis swarf cutting with barrel-shaped tools result in significant reduction in machining time. Furthermore, the precision and high finish of machined free-form surfaces created by hyperMILL® reduces the often expensive and time-intensive manual rework machining to a minimum.
