Global Marketing Insights Completes NOAA 2006 Asia Remote Sensing Study

CLEVELAND, OH, 28 March 2007 – Global Marketing Insights, Inc. has completed the “2006 Asian Survey and Analysis of Remote Sensing Market, Aerial and Spaceborne” and delivered the final report to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Satellite and Information Service Division.

NOAA has accepted the final report and posted it as a PDF for downloading at http://www.licensing.noaa.gov/NOAA_AsianRemoteSensing_MarketSurvey.pdf. Global Marketing Insights has also made the report available at www.globalinsights.com.

The NOAA Satellite and Information Service Division contracted Global Marketing Insights to conduct a research study of the Western remote sensing market as it relates to aerial and satellite data technologies in 2005 and extended the contract to include Asia in 2006. Global Marketing Insights created a series of extensive online surveys covering issues related to eight sectors of the remote sensing market: aerial film, aerial digital, aerial sensors, satellites, commercial end users, value added hardware and software, academic, and government. These surveys were completed by geospatial industry professionals and end users in Asia between March and November 2006.

“NOAA’s primary goal for the survey was to learn about the technological, political, economic and environmental trends impacting each of those sectors,” said Dr. Shawana Johnson, President of Global Marketing Insights. “The survey results provide a comparison to the Western study completed a year ago and provides an overview of where the worldwide remote sensing market is heading – from the viewpoints of both data and service providers and end users.”

To receive Asian input needed to make the survey a success, Global Marketing Insights established an international network of 21 Alliance Research Partners that hosted the website for the surveys and encouraged their clients to participate in the online survey. Ultimately, 408 online surveys were completed, as well as, 50 in-depth personal interviews recorded. Over 1000 pages of statistics were generated from the data collected. The final report was based on the specific requirements and analysis required by NOAA.

“In addition to the specific trend analysis report requested by NOAA, there is a great deal of statistical data relating revenues and technological needs of remote sensing users,” said Johnson.

Participants in all segments of the geospatial industry will find valuable market insight in the NOAA 2006 Asian Remote Sensing Survey report. Some of these trends and insights include:
  • Asian Remote Sensing Workforce half the age of the Western Workforce;

  • Asian participants were highly skilled in technical analysts compared to the Western participants who were technical and GIS managers;

  • Asian respondents focused on improving technology such as processing speed and data storage;

  • Asian satellite sector predicting strong growth during coming decade with support of the Asian government sector.

“I was very interested in the focus of the Asian respondents on the Satellite sector and their predicted growth,” said Kay Weston, Commercial Remote Sensing Program Manager for the NOAA's Satellite and Information Services. “The study highlights a growing Asian remote sensing industry.”
