NEW YORK (December 22, 2022)The following is a statement from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) commending the U.S. House and Senate on crafting a Fiscal Year 2023 Omnibus appropriations bill that fully funds critical U.S. science and engineering research agencies. These agencies include the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Energy (DOE), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), as well as programs such as the DOE’s National Laboratory network and regional technology hubs including the Manufacturing USA network.

“The House and Senate should be commended for their work in crafting an appropriations bill that will provide critical funding increases for key U.S. science and engineering research agencies, as well as workforce development and competitiveness programs that will strengthen the American workforce and the nation’s ability to compete globally,” says ASME Executive Director/CEO Tom Costabile. “These provisions are longtime ASME priorities and align with the goals identified by Congress and the science and engineering community in the CHIPS and Science Act. The Omnibus funding effectively promotes activities critical to innovation that support the education, training, and professional preparation of our nation’s scientific and engineering workforce. It is now time for the Congress to pass this measure and send it to the President. We at ASME look forward to partnering with Congress and the Administration in the new year to continue advancing engineering technology for the benefit of humanity.”

About ASME
ASME helps the global engineering community develop solutions to real world challenges. Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, and skill development across all engineering disciplines, while promoting the vital role of the engineer in society. ASME codes and standards, publications, conferences, continuing education, and professional development programs provide a foundation for advancing technical knowledge and a safer world. In 2020, ASME formed the International Society of Interdisciplinary Engineers (ISIE) LLC, a new for-profit subsidiary to house business ventures that will bring new and innovative products, services, and technologies to the engineering community, and later established the holding company, Global Knowledge Solutions LLC. In 2021, ASME launched a second for-profit subsidiary, Metrix Connect LLC, an industry events and content platform to accelerate digital transformation in the engineering community and an agent for the Mechanical Engineering® brand of media products.
