Developers are invited to the OGC Interoperable Simulation and Gaming Sprint

This OGC Sprint will test a draft API that provides a simple method to retrieve 3D tiled resources in a manner independent of the underlying data store.

8 July 2020: The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has issued a Call For Participation for its upcoming Interoperable Simulation and Gaming Sprint, to be held 14-18 September* 2020, at the SOFWERX facility in Tampa, FL. Funding is available for selected participants.

Over a week-long coding effort, the Sprint seeks to test the implementability of the 3D Data Container and Tiles API draft specification developed as part of the OGC 3D Container and Tiles API Pilot. This draft specification allows simple retrieval of 3D tiled resources, such as geometries, feature attribute values, and/or texture data, in a manner that focuses on providing space-centric access to 2d and 3d datasets that are distributed in a variety of formats and models. This approach not only simplifies access, but also allows the integration of disparate 2D and 3D data sources into a single environment. The draft specification aligns with OGC Web API Guidelines and supports multiple 3D geospatial standards from the OGC portfolio, including 3D Tiles, I3S, CDB, and CityGML.

Up to six organizations will be selected for funded participation, with each selected participant or organization receiving a stipend of $15,000 to use as they see fit. The funding can be used to cover the cost of travel, equipment, individual funding, or miscellaneous expenses. Organizations not selected for funding may choose to participate at their own expense with prior approval.

At OGC Sprints, technology and domain experts, programmers and program managers come together to test and recommend improvements to draft specifications. Sprints can examine questions such as whether a specification is easily implementable, consistent, complete, and sufficiently mature.

The Sprint application process is open to anyone. This includes all OGC member and non-member companies, individuals, teams, and universities. OGC encourages participation by organizations with geospatial experience that have not worked with OGC in the past.

To learn more about the Sprint, or to download the Call For Participation, visit the Interoperable Simulation and Gaming Sprint page on the OGC website. For information on other OGC Sprints, both past and future, visit the OGC Sprints webpage.

*The dates may change depending on the state of Covid-19 infections and other national issues. If by August 14, 2020 there are still travel restrictions, the Sprint will be held virtually.

About OGC
The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is an international consortium of more than 500 businesses, government agencies, research organizations, and universities driven to make geospatial (location) information and services FAIR - Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.
OGC’s member-driven consensus process creates royalty free, publicly available geospatial standards. Existing at the cutting edge, OGC actively analyzes and anticipates emerging tech trends, and runs an agile, collaborative Research and Development (R&D) lab that builds and tests innovative prototype solutions to members' use cases.
OGC members together form a global forum of experts and communities that use location to connect people with technology and improve decision-making at all levels. OGC is committed to creating a sustainable future for us, our children, and future generations.
