ACEC/MA announces STV as a 2019 Silver Award Winner in Engineering Excellence for the Longfellow Bridge Rehabilitation Design-Build

BOSTON, MA – JUNE 24, 2019 – The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named STV a silver award winner for Engineering Excellence for its work on the Longfellow Bridge Rehabilitation Design-Build in Boston, MA.

The rehabilitation of the Longfellow Bridge improved its structural integrity and restored and preserved an iconic architectural achievement from the turn of the last century. The project reestablishes a reliable route for vehicles and the Red Line and promotes cycling and walking through bicycle lanes and widened sidewalks. The scope encompassed the complete reconstruction of the original 11 arch spans and a 12th span installed later; the seismic retrofit of 12 masonry substructures; and the reconstruction of the four “salt and pepper” towers. Several unique construction methods were used to complement the bridge’s historic character, including riveting on exterior steelwork.

The rehabilitation and restoration of the Longfellow Bridge was an extraordinary example of collaboration and teamwork. Not only was the bridge made safe and functional for generations, the bridge’s many character defining elements were carefully restored or replicated by skilled craftsmen. This was all accomplished while keeping the bridge in service for the Red Line, vehicular traffic and pedestrians during construction. The $306.5 million project not only restored and preserved a jewel of the Boston skyline, it also allows the bridge to

meet 21st century transportation demands, all while honoring the structure’s original architectural grandeur.  STV has a Massachusetts office in Boston.

.The 2019 Engineering Excellence Awards were announced at the recent ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala with special guest emcees Jonathan L. Gulliver, Highway Administrator at MassDOT and Frederick A. Laskey, Executive Director of MWRA.

“Each year we gather to celebrate and recognize engineering firms for projects that demonstrate innovation and excellence,” said Michael J. Walsh, PE, President of ACEC/MA and Vice President of CDM Smith. “We congratulate our winners who work tirelessly throughout the year to advance the goals and values of our organization and the industry.”
