“If you’re always first in line to test the latest gadgets, Emerging Technologies is for you,” noted SIGGRAPH 2019 Emerging Technologies Chair Courtney Starrett. “Through this experiential venue, the computer graphics and interactive techniques community is able to showcase the latest, game-changing technology being designed to help the people of the future thrive.”

Innovation in technology helps science discover new methods of resolving issues, and SIGGRAPH is committed to being a space where minds meet at the mid-point between inception and adoption. In addition to hailing from eight countries worldwide, this year’s projects represent advances from academic institutions like MIT and University of Tokyo as well as Sony, Adobe Research, and NVIDIA. Highlights include:

Arque: Artificial Biomimicry-Inspired Tail for Extending Innate Body Functions
Contributors: Junichi Nabeshima and MHD Yamen Saraiji, Keio University Graduate School of Media Design; and Kouta Minamizawa, Keio University Graduate School of Media Design, Japan Science and Technology Agency
For most vertebrate animals, tail plays an important role for their body, providing variant functions to expand their mobility. In this work, Arque, we propose an artificial biomimicry-inspired anthropomorphic tail to allow us to alter our body momentum for assistive and haptic feedback applications.

Golf Training System Using Sonification and Virtual Shadow
Contributors: Atsuki Ikeda, Yuka Tanaka, Dong-Hyun Hwang, Homare Kon, and Hideki Koike, Tokyo Institute of Technology
We present a golf training system using real-time audio-visual feedback. The visual feedback imitating the user's shadow shows the correct form of the golf swing and the audio feedback helps to maintain the correct rotation angle of the golf club.

ChicMR: Immersive Mixed Reality System Using Video See-Thru HMD and 3D LiDAR Scanner
Contributors: Jin Ha Hwang, Younguk Kim, Yong-Ho Lee, Jinbaek Kim, JungKyu Kim, and Bum-Jae You, Center of Human-Centered Interaction for Coexistence; and, Hyukmin Kwon, Korea Institute of Science and Technology
This project aims to build a system that employs a 3D LiDAR stereo camera and HMD to create a mixed reality environment in which the user can interact not only with virtual objects but also with real world objects.

Active Textile Tailoring
Contributors: Skylar Tibbits, Jared Laucks, Schendy Kernizan, Bjorn Sparrman, Lavender Tessmer, and Carmel Snow, MIT, Self-Assembly Lab; and, Gihan Amarasiriwardena, Ministry of Supply
Active Textile Tailoring is a new process for creating smart textiles that can change shape and structure, allowing for a new type of customized tailoring or aesthetic patterning. This technology was developed by MIT's Self-Assembly Lab, Ministry of Supply, Hills Inc., and Iowa State University with support from AFFOA.

A Stretch-Sensing Soft Glove for Interactive Hand Pose Estimation
Contributors: Oliver Glauser, Shihao Wu, Otmar Hilliges, and Olga Sorkine-Hornung, ETH Zurich; and, Daniele Panozzo, New York University
We propose a stretch-sensing soft glove to interactively capture hand poses with high accuracy. A deep network exploiting the spatial sensor layout reconstructs the pose from the embedded capacitive sensors. The emerging technology visitors have the chance to try our new stretch-sensing glove in interactive demos.
