September 23, 2018 -- Erlangen, Germany/IBC, Amsterdam (NL): The Fraunhofer-Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS presents its new Software Development Kit (SDK) with optimized functions to code images with the new JPEG XS codec. JPEG XS is suited for use in production environments where high resolution image data of up to 8k/60p UHD video must be transferred via Ethernet. The coding specialists of Fraunhofer IIS will demonstrate the JPEG XS codec as complete live stream with real-time playback.
Increasing amounts of permanent data with high resolution and high dynamic range will briefly swamp the transmission capabilities over long-distance cable lengths in studio environments, and while using existing coaxial cabling solutions. These trends in substituting specialized cables and switches for video transmission by commercial off the shelf (COTS) components and forcing the use of simple, cost-effective IP transmission over standard Ethernet infrastructures is an important driver for new coding solutions.
Fraunhofer IIS is among the first providers of JPEG XS SDK for enabling video over IP transmission in production quality. At IBC 2018, Fraunhofer IIS will introduce JPEG XS SDK and demonstrate a complete real-time streaming workflow from the camera to
encoding/decoding of 4k/30p on the CPU with the JPEG XS codec and real-time display.
What are the benefits of JPEG XS?
JPEG XS is a new codec under standardization by ISO/IEC SC29 WG1 (‘JPEG committee’) for IP workflows in studio environments, local video networks and VR/AR applications that allow for transferring high-resolution video data over standard Ethernet or other wired connections. The codec is optimized for use with mezzanine compression when high image quality data is transferred via limited bandwidth or processed with limited computing resources.
The Fraunhofer IIS JPEG XS development can be used for low complexity and platform-independency applications at compression ratios from 2:1 to minimum 6:1. JPEG XS enables a simple integration in all existing hardware or software systems like cameras and extenders, due to the high granularity of parallelism in the algorithm. The codec is proposed to take advantage of the SMPTE 2110 transmission layer system over IP.
