Blaze Makoid Architecture Takes Home Two Awards at AIA Peconic Chapter’s Annual Design Awards

East Hampton, NY – December 4, 2017 –  Blaze Makoid Architecture is pleased to announce its win of two awards at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Peconic Chapter’s 2017 Daniel J. Rowen Design Awards held on Saturday, December 2nd in East Hampton, NY. The firm received the Honor Award in the  Architecture category for Old Orchard in East Hampton and the Juror’s Award in the  Historic Preservation/Adaptive Reuse category for Huntting Lane, also in East Hampton.

Old Orchard, East Hampton, NY: One year after purchasing this 10,000 square foot modern spec house, the homeowners brought on Blaze Makoid Architecture to give the residence a complete redo. BMA addressed a series of programmatic issues with architectural moments. The language of simple wood and glass elements offers a recognizable contrast to the aluminum skin of the existing building and begins to warm the material palette. A new wood ‘tube’ was added to bisect the main structure, creating an entry plinth a few steps above the existing floor and setting up a visual alignment with a new pool house structure across the property. The second and third elements occur at either end of the existing structure, separated by small glass bridges.

Huntting Lane, East Hampton, NY: This one-acre site was originally part of a much larger estate built around 1903 and subsequently torn down.  This project focuses on the reuse of the abandoned foundation, which is situated between the new house and the pool area, and redesign of the pathways, arbor and pool. The goal was to create a series of outdoor spaces, ranging from contemplative to large scale entertaining.  Inspired by the modernist, crafted interventions of Carlo Scarpa, the design inserts new details that compliment and honor the existing structure. Concrete stairs, board formed concrete walls, cedar structures and steel details make up a strong, readable material palette. The ÍšhubÍ› of the project is a trellis covered lounge area at the floor level of the main house, overlooking the sunken rooms.  It is used during the day and evening, with and without guests.  Access to the lower spaces are via a grand stair of ÍšfloatingÍ› precast concrete. Three ÍšroomsÍ› are arranged by function and time of day.  The peaceful sound of water from a steel and concrete fountain provides a meditative space surrounded on three sides by plantings and on the fourth, a simple wood seat.  The largest of the three spaces is the outdoor dining room with a custom table and seating the Íšfire to waterÍ› axis is completed by a board formed concrete fireplace and evening lounge.
