Jul 7, 2017 -- Buildings provide fundamental services, such as comfortable indoor conditioned environments with lighting, ventilation and temperature control, allowing our society to function every day. Natural hazards, including severe storms, earthquakes, and wildfires, can cut off energy supplied to these buildings, disrupting these core functions and rendering buildings uninhabitable. Often, buildings are not designed to withstand these sever weather events, resulting in significant, and at times, irreparable damage. Recent natural disasters, like hurricanes Sandy and Katrina, have highlighted the issue of architectural resiliency - the ability of buildings to weather disruptions and disasters. Zero energy buildings have a natural place in efforts to improve the resiliency of our built environment. Onsite energy production allows zero energy buildings to continue operating when grid power fails, but requires special attention and planning to successfully support resiliency. This webinar addresses the topic of resiliency and how to pursue zero energy as a part of that goal. The webinar will focus on key considerations that allow zero energy design to actually contribute to resiliency, and highlight the pitfalls and barriers that can prevent achieving resiliency.

This two-part webinar covers the practical realities of benchmarking buildings, whether for compliance with the many emerging benchmarking ordinances being implemented by cities, or for pursuing improved energy performance. Part I covers the step-by-step process of gathering and entering the required benchmarking data into the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, including the necessary steps for complying with local benchmarking ordinances, such as those in New York City and Boston. This is also the first step in assessing the performance of the building in order to tailor retrofit projects for maximum effectiveness.
