Jun 17, 2016 -- In less than two weeks, the National Institute of Building Sciences Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC) will host a free webinar. The "2015 NEHRP Design Examples" webinar with take place Tuesday, June 28, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm ET.

The third in a series of webinars sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that highlight the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program's (NEHRP) 2015 NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions for Buildings and Other Structures, this webinar will provide an overview of the NEHRP Recommended Provisions: Design Examples, which illustrate and explain the applications of the 2015 NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions; ASCE 7-16: Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures; and the material design standards referenced in both documents.

Robert G. Pekelnicky, PE, a principal of Degenkolb Engineers in San Francisco, member of the BSSC Provisions Update Committee and chair of Project 17's Acceptable Risk Work Group, will give the presentation. Pekelnicky specializes in making community and business infrastructure resilient against earthquakes, explosions and other hazards. He has applied his multi-hazard mitigation knowledge to various projects for government, high-technology and healthcare clients. His career has focused on taking new, innovative structural engineering concepts from research and applying them to practice to better meet clients' needs.

Presentations from the first webinar, "Site Factors," by CB Crouse, PhD, PE, and Nico Luco, PhD, on March 22, and the second webinar, "Chapter 16, Nonlinear Response-History Analysis for the Design of New Buildings," by Curt B. Haselton, PhD, PE, on April 28, are available on the BSSC website. View the presentations.

About the NEHRP Recommended Provisions

Under the sponsorship of FEMA, BSSC administers an ongoing consensus-based process of updating and maintaining the NEHRP Recommended Provisions for New Buildings and Other Structures. The NEHRP Recommended Provisions and its Commentary embody the state-of-knowledge criteria for design and construction of new buildings subject to earthquake hazards. The new knowledge and technologies contained in this resource document are diffused into the model building codes developed by the International Code Council (ICC) and several national standards, including the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) ASCE/SEI-7 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures.
