PALO ALTO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- Feb 19, 2016 -- Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE: HPE) announced today that Telecom Personal, a company indirectly controlled by the Telecom Italia group, has selected HPE as a supplier for its core network transformation.
Telecom Personal is modernizing its network to deliver 4G/LTE technologies to meet customers' increasing data use. It chose HPE to help expand and upgrade part of its network core to provide its customers a better service experience, as well as higher network speeds and capacity.
"Mobile data is at the center of our strategy to enable our customers with the best user experience and we are making a huge transformation in our network to support it," said Paolo Perfetti, CTO, Telecom Personal. "HPE's combined telecommunications and IT experience and open approach make it a trusted supplier to help us meet customer needs."
HPE will provide Telecom Personal a core network architecture with open standard interfaces, enabling it to treat subscriber data management (SDM) as a network agnostic function. This will enable out-of-the box integration with third party network solutions, giving Telecom Personal the flexibility to evolve with future network advancements and avoid network vendor lock-in. This is a departure from the traditional model, where network equipment providers also supply proprietary SDM and core network functions.
"As Telecom Personal works to modernize its networking capabilities, our core solutions can enable them, and other CSPs, to handle SDM via a reliable, scalable and flexible approach," said Dave Sliter, vice president and general manager, Communications & Media Solutions, HPE. "This approach is open to the evolution of networks and introduction of future technologies."
Specifically, HPE will provide Telecom Personal with a complete network core solution that includes the following network functions:
- Policy and charging rules function (PCRF) - determines network configuration and charging definitions in real-time per specific subscriber, service and delivery situation
- Home subscriber system (HSS) / Home location register (HLR) - delivers subscriber profiles for performing authentication and authorization of users and availing subscriber aware services
-
User data repository (UDR) - provides network agnostic, centralized management of subscriber information using open standards
