Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure Acquires Cambridge Systematics' Transportation Permitting Software

Purchase provides customers with complete solution for oversize, overweight vehicle permitting and routing

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Feb. 17, 2016 — (PRNewswire) —  Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure has acquired Cambridge Systematics' oversize/overweight (OS/OW) vehicle permitting software. The permitting application will be combined with Hexagon's routing applications, providing departments of transportation with a single solution to ensure safe and efficient travel of oversize/overweight vehicles through their communities.

The new, fully integrated solution from Hexagon will feature the former Cambridge Systematics' permitting application, PermitCS, and Hexagon's route planning and restriction management applications. PermitCS will be renamed and rebranded as a Hexagon product. Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure and Cambridge Systematics have successfully partnered to serve the OS/OW market since 2009, and multiple states currently use the combined solution. The companies will collaborate to ensure a smooth transition for existing customers.

"By combining Cambridge Systematics' permitting software with Hexagon's routing applications, we're able to offer an end-to-end oversize/overweight solution to state, county and city departments of transportation," said Steven Cost, president, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure. "This acquisition demonstrates our commitment to an important transportation market sector. Our goal is to be the leading provider of OS/OW solutions in North America."

"PermitCS, which has served as a powerful and reliable permitting solution for more than 15 years, is one example of Cambridge Systematics' commitment to building and operating mission-critical information systems for our clients," said Eric Ziering, executive vice president and principal, Cambridge Systematics. "This transaction enables us to extend our investment in and focus on open source software platforms, applying our transportation domain expertise to empower agencies with asset management, real-time information and transportation planning and modeling solutions."

The OS/OW solution aids highways departments charged with the issuance of OS/OW permits. Using the application, trucking company customers electronically submit load information and payments. The system automatically determines the best and safest routes – factoring in restrictions – and manages approvals. In a short time, permits are generated to department specifications and trucking companies can continue their travels, improving customer satisfaction, ensuring highway safety and generating revenue for the state.

"With the acquisition, we're able to offer transportation customers with an even more robust and integrated solution," said Hank DiPietro, vice president and general manager, U.S. utilities, communications and transportation, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure. "We took a very strong routing solution and merged it with a very strong permitting solution, creating the leading OS/OW solution on the market. We're excited to bring this new opportunity to customers."

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure's highways solutions connect the enterprise with current, authoritative data, improving planning and operations and helping to focus limited resources where they will deliver the greatest benefit. Dozens of state, provincial and local transportation departments in the U.S. and Canada rely on Hexagon's solutions.
