Welcome to Teledyne Optech's Latest Newsletter!

There have been some momentous changes in the last quarter for Teledyne Optech, including new leadership under COO Michel Stanier and the departure of our founder, Dr. Allan Carswell. Teledyne Optech remains committed to maintaining our leadership in the lidar industry with new technologies and a new focus for our Client Services team. Last but not least, we are heading into space yet again, this time to visit the asteroid Bennu aboard NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft! Read on for more...
Leadership Change
Teledyne Optech says farewell to Dr. Allan Carswell

Dr. Allan Carswell led the company through 40 years of innovation in lidar technology
COO Michel Stanier is assuming leadership responsibilities from CEO Don Carswell

This November, Teledyne Optech completed its leadership transition as Dr. Allan Carswell left the company to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. Following this planned change in ownership and leadership, Don and Elizabeth Carswell, previously President and VP Sales, have also retired from day-to-day operations, while former EVP of Business Development Michel Stanier has accepted the position of Chief Operating Officer and takes over leadership of the company from Don.

Dr. Carswell founded Optech in 1974 as an offshoot of his work at York University, and over the last 40 years he made it a leader in advanced laser-based survey and digital imaging instrumentation. Teledyne Technologies first acquired shares in the parent company of Optech in March 2011, and purchased the remaining shares in April 2015. As Teledyne Optech, the company's future looks bright thanks to strong leadership, our experienced team of engineers, scientists and managers, financial support from Teledyne Technologies, and collaboration opportunities with our Teledyne sister companies.

Teledyne Optech heading into space aboard OSIRIS-REx
Designed by Teledyne Optech, OLA is being installed on OSIRIS-REx for launch in 2016 (photo courtesy of MDA)
We are happy to announce that Teledyne Optech's contribution to NASA's  Origins-Spectral Interpretation-Resource Identification-Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx)  spacecraft has passed review and is being prepared for installation. Scheduled for launch in September 2016, OSIRIS-REx will head towards asteroid Bennu and bring back to Earth a sample of its surface material to give scientists important insights into the solar system's history. Before the spacecraft touches down on Bennu, it will survey the entire 500-m diameter asteroid using the  OSIRIS-REx Laser Altimeter (OLA)  designed by Teledyne Optech and built by our partners at MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates (MDA). Equipped with short- and long-range lasers and a scanning mirror, OLA will create a highly detailed 3D map that will help scientists analyse Bennu's morphology and select the best place for OSIRIS-REx to collect its sample. Teledyne Optech is excited to work with NASA and the Canadian Space Agency once again, and we are very proud of our team for delivering this complex instrument on schedule.
SwathTRAK™ improves Galaxy efficiency by 40% in Quebec test
By keeping a consistent swath width on the ground, the Galaxy's SwathTRAK™ saves time and money
Recent surveys with the Optech Galaxy have confirmed that its SwathTRAK™ technology can improve efficiency by up to 40% . When a long-time client of ours expressed interest in the Galaxy, we took the system to the hills of Quebec, Canada. Mountainous terrain like this stymies traditional fixed-FOV sensors, as surveyors bunch their flightlines close together to avoid both gaps between their swaths and insufficient point density. In our test, SwathTRAK used the Galaxy's variable FOV to keep a consistent swath width on the ground at all times even when the terrain changed by up to 650 m, letting us use fewer, more widely spaced flightlines. The numbers revealed just how much SwathTRAK saved: By reducing the number of flightlines required from 13 to 8, our client would save up to 40% of their time and fuel using the Galaxy over a traditional fixed-FOV lidar. As a bonus, the point spacing on the ground remains consistent and on-spec, making the Optech Galaxy the must-have sensor for surveyors serious about maximizing their ROI, efficiency, and overall data quality.
Titan exceeds expectations for depth penetration
The Optech Titan shows its simultaneous topo/bathy capabilities
The Optech Titan multispectral lidar exceeded expectations for its bathymetric performance recently during a survey in Georgian Bay, Canada. In tests in the waters around Doctor Island, the Titan's green 532-nm laser channel detected returns at depths of up to 22 meters, well beyond its expected limit of 15 meters. On the same flight, the Titan surveyed the topography of the island and nearby parts of the Bruce Peninsula using all three laser channels at once. With data simultaneously collected from three channels at different wavelengths (532, 1064, and 1550 nm), the Titan also vastly improves target classification. This test shows the remarkable flexibility that the Titan gives surveyors to switch between highly efficient topographic mapping and shallow-water bathymetry with a single lidar system.
Client Services
Around-the-clock support and service with your Client Solutions Manager
Our CSMs give clients fast, knowledgeable assistance around the clock.

On November 1st Teledyne Optech updated our service and support model. We developed a new position to provide a personal and knowledgeable first point of contact whenever clients have questions or concerns about Teledyne Optech equipment and operations. These individuals, our Client Solutions Managers (CSMs), are excited to be supporting your lidar business needs. All clients have been introduced to their designated CSM, who will provide personal contact and consistency to our valued clients.

For critical and urgent situations, the best communication method is to call your CSM directly via telephone. For less urgent inquiries, such as consulting about a data processing issue or getting a better understanding of how the FMS software works, please follow the timing and communication method that you and your CSM have mutually agreed upon (typically email communication with a promise to respond within 24 hours). Those choosing the On-Demand option are welcome to contact our central contact telephone at +1-905-532-3750 or our email alias,  technical.solutions@teledyneoptech.com . Please follow the prompts and press 2 to select On-Demand Support and reach the On-Demand Client Solutions Manager.

We value your business and continue to respond to the ever-changing business needs of our clients.
