Has Increased BIM adoption influenced the growth of engineering services outsourcing?

May 18, 2015 -- The engineering outsourcing industry has grown manifolds in the past decade, and has transformed into a crucial resource pool for construction companies, who depend on it for engineering expertise and their niche project requirements.

One of the prime reasons for the rapid evolution and adoption of engineering services outsourcing, is rapid industrialization in several nations across the globe.

Another prime reason is that the AEC industry is now using BIM modeling for all types of construction projects, and this indirectly translates into higher adoption of engineering services being outsourced. This has happened because, as BIM adoption and implementation across construction projects has increased, outsourcing companies too are getting more work for architectural, structural and MEP modeling services, the intention here is to increase productivity.

With outsourcing companies, drafting and modeling is completely digitalized and any type of complex designs can be deftly handled. Similarly drafting and modeling for preconstruction engineering can also be done.

Designs in the form of 3D models can be communicated easily, efficiently and swiftly to anyone and anywhere in the world. This also means that construction companies can hire engineering services from anywhere in the world and go ahead with the construction project without a glitch.

Besides BIM 6D promises to look after the sustainability aspect, which is not possible without creating effective simulations and energy analysis of a building. Several other aspects in a building design, such as fire safety, heating, cooling, ventilation etc, can be effectively carried out by using computer aided engineering support.

The adoption of BIM and hence the adoption of engineering consulting services and other computer aided engineering solutions by construction industry giants, AEC firms and contractors involved in building design and construction projects is on the rise.

BIM and other engineering services are outsourced mainly for mega projects where designs are complex, and local teams need support to manage the drafting, modeling, simulations and analysis stages.

The uptake for BIM and outsourcing related engineering services is predicted to rise, in the coming years, especially in the gulf countries.

a) There are several new mega projects (buildings and infrastructure) announced in Saudi Arabia and

b) BIM adoption and implementation is a necessity, Dubai municipality has mandated its use for all large projects.

The BIM wave is sweeping the Middle East and virtually every place where mega structures are proposed, and with this there is an increase in the demand for both BIM and related engineering services outsourcing.
