Perceptron Launches a New Family of High Power, Extended Dynamic Range HELIX(R) Smart Laser Scanning Sensors for Automotive & Aerospace Measuring Applications

PLYMOUTH, MI -- (Marketwired) -- Apr 22, 2015 -- Perceptron, Inc. (NASDAQ: PRCP) -- Perceptron has significantly extended the performance of its market leading HELIX smart scanning sensor with the addition of HELIX HDR, a Higher power and extended Dynamic Range version. HELIX HDR produces a thinner laser line and higher power, coupled with a wider measurement resolution that allows measurement of the most demanding applications including highly reflective surfaces such as finely machined aluminum castings.

Perceptron's CEO Jeff Armstrong states, "This new family of HELIX HDR sensors extend our capabilities by enabling measurement of extremely demanding applications in the automotive and aerospace sectors where machined aluminum is used extensively. This development is a good example of our commitment to extending our technology through robust R&D activities along with high customer satisfaction. We expedited the planned development and have delivered the first production units to a Tier 1 automotive customer for aluminum engine cradles that have a near mirror finish machined surface. The customer was delighted as there was no other solution available."

The patented HELIX smart scanning sensor is used extensively throughout the global automotive industry for in-process laser scanning of car bodies for dimensional stability and gap-and-flush measurement.

HELIX incorporates MEMS technology and offers the world's only programmable laser scanner, where the laser line quantity, density, length and orientation characteristics are all user-programmable. This eliminates the need to physically move the laser unit during scanning, which helps ensure both accurate and repeatable measurement results. All motion is contained within the HELIX smart-scanning sensor, dramatically improving the quality and accuracy of scanned data and allowing the capture of multiple part features in one sensor position. HELIX contains an imbedded accelerometer to determine real-time sensor orientation and has been developed specifically for advanced robotic inspection applications where the robot moves the sensor to discrete measuring positions from which the HELIX sensor can collect all required measuring data.

The scanned dataset from HELIX is streamed real-time into a shop-hardened control system which uses Perceptron proprietary VECTOR® software which allows automatic part feature geometry extraction from the generated point cloud for dimensional analysis.
