Apple CEO Tim Cook recently announced that the highly anticipated Apple Watch will ship to consumers in April 2015. The new smart watch will incorporate fitness tracking and health-oriented capabilities as well as integration with iOS and other Apple products and services.
In advance of the Apple Watch launch, Fruit Street has begun building an Apple Watch app through WatchKit, an SDK specifically designed for Apple Watch app development. The app is currently included in iOS 8.2 beta 3, iOS SDK 8.2 beta 3, and Xcode 6.2 beta 3. In November 2014, Apple Watch was listed by Time as one of the 25 Best Inventions of 2014.
The Apple watch monitors how many calories a user has burned, how much activity a user has engaged in, as well as heart rate monitoring and other functionality. The device has an accelerometer that measures total body movement and steps. It detects when a user has been running or walking, and calculates calories burned from the activities a user has engaged in throughout your day. Additionally, when a user is not in a workout, Apple Watch uses an accelerometer, along with the GPS and WiFi in their iPhone, to measure all kinds of physical movement. Fruit Street is building a personal health record similar to Apple's Health Kit which will integrate all major wearable devices into a centralized personal health record.
One of the primary differences between Apple Health Kit and Fruit Street is that Fruit Street integrates this personal health record into a telemedicine platform which allows healthcare providers to review the data in-real time during telemedicine sessions with patients.
Upon launch, the Apple Watch will be fully integrated into the Fruit Street platform as well as Fruit Street's virtual lifestyle medicine clinic.
This new Fruit Street Wellness Clinic product has been designed specifically for healthcare providers who are looking to monitor the lifestyle of their patients and conduct virtual consultations on Fruit Street's HIPAA compliant FDA-registered video solution. This will enable clinicians to monitor lifestyle data from their patients such as sleep, exercise, diet, weight, blood pressure, and blood glucose data. The alert system also will send notifications to healthcare providers when patients don't exercise enough, sleep too little, gain weight, or skimp on their fruit and vegetable intake.
This news comes on the heels of last month's announcement that Fruit Street has launched its Fruit Street Wellness Clinic solution for healthcare providers. Additionally, Fruit Street recently announced its formation as a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation ("B Corp"), as well as the appointment of leading physicians to its Advisory Board.
