"Where Science Meets Art" and it begins with a TED Talk!

At just 15 years old, Michelle Marquez created a three minute experimental film that aims to challenge the traditional division and separation between Science and Art which debuted at the recent TEDxYouth@RVA talk held in Richmond, Virginia.

RICHMOND, Va., Dec. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Michelle's TEDxYouth@RVA Talk:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySjOqdmQiUA

Michelle Marquez created a three minute experimental film that aims to challenge the traditional division and separation between Science and Art.  Her three-year journey in research has revealed the deeply rooted biological connection that the human brain forms with complex images, sounds, and music. Her award winning neuroscience research correlates a mathematical parameter (fractal dimension) of music and/or images with the selective triggering of emotional states. She used her scientific discoveries as a platform to share her dream of finding a place "Where Science Meets Art" in her recent TED lecture. She used drones for aerial photography to capture images with a special camera converted to use Infrared (720 nm). Those images were blended with original music created especially for this film, which was 'mathematically' directed by the teenage director & producer. She is breaking the barrier between Art and Science to create a unique visual and audio experience of time perceptions and emotional dimensions. She invites viewers to ride this emotional roller coaster while dreaming about a place "Where Science Meets Art" at the James River.

Michelle Marquez Bio:

Michelle Marquez is a fifteen-year-old sophomore at the Math & Science High School at Clover Hill in Midlothian, VA. She has developed a passion for understanding the human perceptions of art using scientific correlations. Michelle discovered the mathematical structure of sounds that triggers selective emotions. She was able to prove that certain types of music affect the brain and that the responses may have an evolutionary and biological basis. Michelle's research provides a new foundation for how music therapy can work in treating symptoms of mood, neurological, and anxiety disorders such as PTSD and attention deficit disorder.

Michelle is an award-winning scientist at the Metro Richmond STEM Fair, Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, and a First Place & Best of Category winner in Behavioral Science at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, California. She was recently interviewed by Dr. Sanjay Gupta on CNN's "Vital Signs" about her award-winning research. A newly discovered asteroid will be named after Michelle by MIT's Lincoln Laboratory and the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research program.  She is also the founder of an Out-of-the-Box neuroscience initiative that explores and promotes a transdisciplinary blend of Arts and STEM fields looking for a place "Where Science Meets Art".
