Accela Closes out Strong Year; Showcases Civic Tech Momentum in Boston

Growing Customer Base and New Solutions to Empower Citizens Set the Stage for Great 2015

BOSTON — (BUSINESS WIRE) — December 1, 2014Accela, the leading provider of civic engagement solutions for government, is celebrating a successful year in the government and civic technology markets with a reception at The Old State House in Boston this evening.

“This has been a remarkable year for Accela. We’ve significantly added to our installed base, rolled out new solutions and continue to build out the Civic Platform,” said Maury Blackman, Accela CEO and President. “The energy and enthusiasm we see every day, from citizens and developers to our colleagues in government, makes us confident that the momentum we built together in 2014 will lead to a game-changing year across the government technology landscape in 2015.”

Accela has enjoyed a strong 2014, securing new customers nationwide and in international markets. While Accela reported more than 500 customers in 2013, that number grew to more than 1,000 in 2014 for an increase of 60 percent in the government agencies that chose Accela to help modernize the way they serve citizens.

Accela attributes this success to expanding the Accela Civic Platform with innovative software developments that have fueled strong organic growth, along with a series of strategic acquisitions, all of which support Accela’s mission to help agencies of all sizes bridge the gap between government and citizen. The Accela Civic Platform grew this year to include tailored solutions to streamline and improve access to the government services that citizens and businesses rely on, including Legislative Management, Recreation and Resource Management, Environmental Health, and Right of Way Management.

The platform was further strengthened by selective acquisitions to increase Accela’s value proposition to customers. This year, Accela acquired the expertise and customers of GeoTMS in enhanced municipal software, Envista in right-of-way coordination, IQM2 in legislative management, Kinsail in recreation and resource management, Government Outreach in citizen relationship management, and Decade Software in environmental health and safety.

Accela also continued its drive to fuel the civic tech market, the rapidly growing group of applications and services that merge technology innovation and civic purpose. Accela views civic tech as a critical catalyst to the state and local governments in the U.S. that are estimated to spend $25.5 billion on IT in 2015, according to IDC Government Insights. Accela sees civic tech inspiring change in the way that local and state government understand and apply technology, opening a new era of open solutions that serve citizens, businesses and government agencies more efficiently and effectively.

To promote the civic tech market, Accela sponsored an industry brief and infographic produced by IDC Government Insights. The report, “Civic Tech Fuels U.S. State and Local Government Transformation,” highlights IDC research on the Civic Tech market. IDC estimates that U.S. civic tech market spending will reach $6.4 billion in 2015, in a space that will grow 14 times faster than traditional state and local government IT spending from 2013 to 2018.

“Civic technology is undoubtedly a high-growth space that we’re watching enthusiastically,” said Ruthbea Yesner Clarke, Research Director, Smart Cities, IDC. “It’s an exciting example of the potential of technology to empower people to be more active citizens, and also encourages government agencies to take a fresh approach to their IT decisions and purchases.”

Accela is committed to fueling the emergence of civic tech, including its own Civic Hero application, which gives citizens an easy way to report community issues to the local government. Accela also runs an annual App Challenge to find and fund civic innovators, and sponsors Code for America, Tumml and more recently, CivicMakers, a community of citizens building a better democracy every day in our technology and governments, our communities and workplaces.

Accela is also the driving force behind CivicData.com, a free portal to simplify and standardize open data sets in the government sector, making it easier for government agencies to publish and manage and for developers to access as they create innovative new applications. Already, more than 200 sets of open government data have been published through CivicData.com.
