Toshiba Expands Line Of Image Recognition Processors For The Automotive Market

TMPV760 series enables night-time pedestrian detection and 3D reconstruction for ADAS applications

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 13, 2014 — (PRNewswire) —   Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. ( TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, today expanded its offering of image recognition processors with the new TMPV760 series aimed at automotive applications. Dubbed TMPV7608XBG, the first device will simplify implementation of next-generation Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADASs), targeting 2018 European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) applications.

The first device in Toshiba's new TMPV760 series of image recognition processors will simplify implementation of next-generation Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS).

"As ADAS technology becomes mainstream for new cars, the market and consumer will be demanding a higher-performing solution," said Deepak Mithani, director of the Mixed-Signal Business Unit, System LSI Group, at TAEC. "Toshiba will be offering advanced ADAS solutions based on decades of image processing research and expertise. This first product in our new TMPV760 series offers car manufacturers an advanced solution that is both cost effective and delivers fast time-to-market. The advanced technologies integrated into our new series can help car manufacturers provide for a safer, better car."

ADAS capabilities supported by the TMPV7608XBG include autonomous emergency braking, traffic signal recognition, lane departure warning/lane keeping assist, high-beam assistance and forward collision warning—many of which are included in the Euro NCAP safety ratings criteria. Similar initiatives are being discussed by the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), as it seeks to make changes to its five-star safety program. The TMPV7608XBG integrates two new enhanced CoHOG [2] accelerators that provide high image recognition accuracy, especially in low light and night-time conditions. The device provides impressive night-time pedestrian detection rates using color-based gradient analysis of images supplied by multiple full HD (2-megapixel) connected cameras.

In addition, the TMPV7608XBG supports a structure-from-motion (SfM) accelerator [3], which enables 3D reconstruction using the input stream of a monocular camera. SfM can detect stationary obstacles on the road surface not detected by conventional pattern recognition algorithms. The processor features eight media processing engines that perform double precision floating point arithmetic calculations and 14 image processing accelerators.

To ensure effective power management, Toshiba is also launching the TC9580FTG power management IC, designed specifically for the TMPV760 series. As a broad-line semiconductor supplier, Toshiba offers a full suite of automotive semiconductor solutions to the market.

Availability
Samples of the TMPV7608XBG image recognition processor will be available in January 2015, with mass production scheduled for December 2016. Samples of the TC9580FTG power management IC will be available at the end of this month; mass production will begin at the end of November 2015.
