Munro Discusses DFM History, Applications and Trends at the Design for Manufacturing Summit

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Oct. 9, 2014 — (PRNewswire) —  At the Design for Manufacturing (DFM) Summit #7 in Brooklyn, New York on Thursday, Oct. 9th, Sandy Munro, CEO of Munro & Associates, Inc., will deliver the keynote address to an audience of industrial designers, product developers, engineers and manufacturers. Munro is a DFM and lean design pioneer with more than 40 years of experience in designing, building and processing components for virtually every industry.

In his presentation, Munro will share his account of, and extensive history with, DFM including key supporters and opponents of the practice, and the difference between winning and losing DFM strategies. He'll share examples of DFM successes and conduct an onsite demo that will quickly show how and why DFM gained its popularity, as well as provide the audience with some quick "lessons learned." Taking current trends a step further, Munro will also discuss the migration and new incarnations of DFM before closing his speech with his thoughts on the future of DFM.

"Often times, I see engineers struggling to fix a problem that is the result of a poor design," Munro said. "Instead of focusing on solving the present problem, I encourage them to eliminate the problem completely by changing the design. This is the simple premise of 'design for manufacturing,' which, when done properly, can dramatically increase a product's quality, cost and efficiency, thereby giving new life to an existing product or concept."

The DFM Summits are global meetings that work to connect industrial designers, product developers, engineers and manufacturers for a decentralized, leaner manufacturing ecosystem. Most recently, the DFM Summit #6 – the first design for manufacturing summit in Europe – was held in Pakhuis de Zwijger, Amsterdam in early October.
