Boston Scientific Moves into Margulies Perruzzi Architects-Designed Global Headquarters

High performance workspace design provides open, state-of-the-art office environment

BOSTON – Aug. 6, 2014 –  Margulies Perruzzi Architects (MPA), one of Boston’s most innovative architectural and interior design firms, announced that it has completed the new global headquarters for  Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE: BSX), a worldwide developer, manufacturer and marketer of medical solutions. MPA provided corporate architecture and interior design services for the new 110,000 SF, four-story building, which completes the fourth side of the company’s existing campus quadrangle in Marlborough, Mass.

“MPA has been a true partner in the design of this modern and efficient building, taking great care that our new global headquarters possesses an energy and ambiance for innovation,” said Paul Donhauser, director of global facilities and real estate at Boston Scientific. “Together, we made sure that the new building worked well with the existing buildings on campus, and inside, paid special attention to the quality of public spaces and the branding of the space to convey our company vision. The new building reflects Boston Scientific’s pride of purpose and creates a new standard for how we work, helping to transform and re-position the company for the future.”

Completed in June 2014, the design of the global headquarters building embraces a high performance workspace strategy that fosters flexibility and collaboration, promotes company branding and core values, and provides a technology-enabled and healthy work environment. The new workspace features an open, collaborative work environment with flexible low-height workstations arranged in “neighborhoods,” and supported by plenty of informal huddle and collaboration spaces and state-of-the-art videoconference rooms. The open office floor plan places glass-fronted private offices away from the perimeter to offer natural light and views for everyone. Expected to achieve LEED Silver certification, the building is consistent with Boston Scientific’s emphasis on sustainability throughout the Marlborough campus.

The two-story lobby is generously branded with dynamically presented information to express the medical device company’s culture of innovation and achievements in science. Directly adjacent to the lobby and viewed from the second floor, an “innovation café” encourages casual collaboration. An employee training center is accessed from a glass-walled gallery looking into a landscaped courtyard, allowing small meetings or casual outdoor relaxation. The location of the new building was selected so that a courtyard between the new and existing buildings could become a series of outdoor rooms and vegetated meeting areas, accessible to and linking all four buildings. All of the buildings in the quadrangle are also connected by enclosed glass walkways.

With an additional 800 employees working on the expanded campus, the increased staff size necessitated upgrading the full service cafeteria, as well as the creation of a new fitness and daycare center. These facilities were located in one of the existing buildings, where one of the floors was fully renovated as a pilot project to test the new space standards intended for use in the new headquarters and around the world. Employees benefit from many other existing campus amenities as well, including a multimedia auditorium, credit union, athletic fields, and scenic woodlands surrounding the headquarters.

The new building is Boston Scientific’s first addition to its 500,000 SF campus, re-positioning the corporate workspace from Natick, Mass. to Marlborough. Columbia Construction was the construction manager for the project. RDK Engineers provided mechanical, engineering, and plumbing services, Odel Engineers provided structural engineering services, and Kelly Engineering provided civil engineering services.
