GGP Showcases EU Directive Software

Jun 18, 2014 -- Following the recent launch of number of software applications to help UK local councils implement and maintain INSPIRE compliant data and working practices GGP will be demonstrating their solutions at an INSPIRE event. The one day event will take place on the 19th June and will demonstrate a range of commercial solutions. INSPIRE was introduced to help make essential environmental data more accessible and useable across the union.

INSPIRE requires public authorities to publish geospatial information related to the environment; for example data about land use, planning and transport, according to strict technical specifications. Publishing of environmental data is designed to enable the cross border and cross agency sharing of information which is vital in helping to respond to, plan for and prevent environmental emergencies such as recent flood events.

In line with the monitoring and reporting requirements of the INSPIRE Directive DEFRA (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs) has recently submitted its latest report to the Commission. This report shows a significant increase in the amount of data published; more than two and half times the number of datasets were published in 2013 than in 2012. The number of View and Download Services has also increased dramatically.

“These figures show a marked improvement in the adoption of the European INSPIRE Directive by Local Authorities and other UK public sector organisations and represent the hard work and commitment of the geospatial industry as a whole,” commented Tim Maxwell, founder and Managing Director of GGP Systems. “Grants are available but this is only part of the solution. Many frontline organisations simply lack the necessary internal resources to staff the work required – that is where organisations such as GGP Systems can help.”

GGP Systems offers an end to end service to help local authorities and other public sector organisations meet their INSIRE obligations. With options available for the data providers and publishers, such as Council’s, for users of environmental data such as emergency responders and for central hubs, the GGP INSPIRE Service Packages represent proven functionality coupled with value for money.

The importance of INSPIRE was recently recognised earlier this year with the announcement of funding by DEFRA under the New Burdens Doctrine for Local Authorities. Grants of up to £8,100 are available to help local authorities meet regulatory compliance for the publishing geospatial information relating to the environment. INSPIRE professionals will be meeting at the Inspire Demonstration on the 19th June from 9.30am and a representative from GGP Systems will be there to demonstrate a range of solutions including training, the process of publishing INSPIRE data, and configuring an Open Source web server solution to maintain control of published data layers.
