DDC-I’s Deos Delivers a Safety-Critical Platform for DO-178C Avionics Applications Targeting Altera’s SoCs

Combines DDC-I’s Deos real-time operating system and OpenArbor development tools with Altera’s ARM-based Cyclone V SoC Hard Processor System

PHOENIX — (BUSINESS WIRE) — May 8, 2014 — DDC-I, a leading supplier of software and professional services for mission- and safety-critical applications, today announced the availability of its Deos™ safety-critical real-time operating system and certification artifacts (up to Design Assurance Level A) for Altera’s ARM-based Cyclone® V SoC Hard Processor System (HPS). Together, Deos and the Cyclone V SoC give avionics developers a DO-178-certifiable real-time operating system (RTOS) that delivers best-in-class performance with the high level of design assurance required for in-flight applications.

“Cyclone V SoCs running Deos provide an excellent user configurable, FPGA-based, hardware platform for developing and deploying high-performance certifiable avionics applications,” said Greg Rose, vice president of marketing and product management at DDC-I. “Our best-in-class software technologies enable avionics developers to maximize the performance delivered by the Cyclone V SoC. Additionally, our pedigree of successful avionics certifications give developers and certification authorities confidence that the system will meet the most rigorous safety critical requirements.”

“The Cyclone V SoC platform delivers a unique blend of high performance, low power, integrated I/O and user configurability that makes it ideal for avionics applications,” added Ian Land, Senior Manager, Military and Aerospace Business Unit at Altera. “DDC-I’s Deos RTOS and OpenArbor development tools give avionics developers targeting Cyclone V SoCs a proven foundation for creating in-flight software that meets DO-178’s highest level of software design assurance.”

Altera SoCs integrate an ARM-based hard processor system (HPS) consisting of processor, peripherals, and memory interfaces with a user-configurable FPGA fabric utilizing a high-bandwidth interconnect backbone based on ARM’s AMBA AXI bus bridges. The HPS features a 925-MHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, each core equipped with a 32KB L1 cache, floating point unit, and versatile memory and I/O options. Avionics systems designers will also benefit from the device’s ECC support for the shared 512KB L2 cache, SDRAM controller, on-chip RAM, and HPS peripheral buffers.

Deos is a safety-critical embedded RTOS that has been certified to DO-178 DAL A since 1998. Featuring deterministic real-time response, the time- and space-partitioned RTOS employs patented slack scheduling to deliver higher CPU utilization than any other certifiable safety-critical COTS RTOS. Deos is built from the ground up for safety-critical applications, and is the only certifiable time- and space-partitioned COTS RTOS that has been created using RTCA DO-178, Level A processes from the very first day of its product development. Deos provides the easiest, lowest cost path of any COTS RTOS to DO-178 Level A certification, the highest level of safety criticality.

Development support for Deos includes DDC-I’s Eclipse-based, mixed-language OpenArbor IDE, which features C and C++ optimizing compilers, a color-coded source editor, project management support, automated build utilities, and symbolic debugger. Also included is a virtual target hardware development tool, QEMU (Quick EMUlator), which allows developers to develop, debug and test their ARM code on their development host PC in advance of actual target hardware availability.

Deos and OpenArbor are available for the Cyclone V-based SoCKit development board. Available from Arrow Electronics, SoCKit provides rapid prototyping and development for the ARM-based Cyclone V platform. The SoCKit is equipped with two Gbytes of DDR SDRAM and features Gigabit Ethernet, USB, 24-bit VGA, 128- x 64-dot LCD with backlight, and a 24-bit audio CODEC with line-in, line-out and microphone-in jacks.

Availability: DDC-I is taking appointments now for demonstrations.
