Si2 Announces Release of OpenAccess Polygon Operators Extension

Allows More Aggressive Resolution Enhancement Techniques

AUSTIN, Texas — (BUSINESS WIRE) — May 6, 2014 — Si2 today announced the release of the OpenAccess eXtension Polygon OPeration library, known as “oaxPop”. This extension to the well-established OpenAccess (OA) design environment allows for the manipulation of OA objects using Boolean operations, interacting selections, and other functions related to the detection and manipulation of various physical design patterns.

In Computer Aided Design (CAD), the concept of a layer as the primary object to hold the data for the shapes, instances, text, and other information required to build integrated circuits (IC) was defined long ago. Layers visible to the CAD engineer have been known as "drawn layers" and are used to build IC designs.

But drawn layers are not the only layers required to build and verify integrated circuits. To keep pace with Moore’s Law, today’s lithography limitations require more aggressive resolution enhancement techniques. Because of these industry limits, derived layers have become more prevalent in the design process. Derived layers are a combination of drawn layers which compare relationships between shapes on each layer to produce new or selected shapes. These new derived layers are used as part of the manufacturing process and verification procedures during the building of advanced integrated circuits.

The Polygon Operators Working Group at Si2 has developed a reference implementation based on the Unified Layer Model (ULM) standard provided by Si2’s Design for Manufacturing Coalition (DFMC), using the open source project Boost::Polygon, initially provided by Intel. By implementing the standardized layer operations defined by the ULM, and utilizing the Boost::Polygon Application Programming Interface (API), this working group has produced a "derived layer engine" which has now been made available to the OpenAccess community.

The Polygon Operators Working Group is part of the OpenAccess Coalition, chaired and sponsored by Si2 member companies. The Polygon Operators Working Group was started on November 28, 2012. Intel Corporation has chaired the working group since its inception.

As oaxPop is an extension to OpenAccess, it is available to any Si2 member who has signed the Extension Steering Group’s license agreement. For more information, please see: https://www.si2.org/openeda.si2.org/projects/oaxpop/

“oaxPop is a perfect example of how even robust and mature, industry-wide standards need to constantly evolve to meet new technological challenges,” says Ramond Rodríguez, EDA Supplier Manager, Intel. “As owners of the OpenAccess API Standard, Si2 is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of OpenAccess, ensuring it has high-value ROI for our members and the industry. oaxPop is the first extension to formally be approved by Si2 under the Extension Steering Group.”

A presentation on this technology consisting of oaxPop working inside Custom Designer will be presented by Synopsys on Monday, June 2, at 11AM in Si2s’ Booth #1107 at the Design Automation Conference.
