WITTENSTEIN High Integrity Systems Extends its Safety-Critical RTOS Support to Renesas RX631/RX63N Microcontrollers

BRISTOL, England & SANTA CLARA, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — February 4, 2014WITTENSTEIN high integrity systems (WHIS), a leading safety systems company, has extended its SAFERTOS Real Time Operating System to support Renesas Electronics’ 32-bit RX631 and RX63N microcontroller (MCU) groups.

“Using SAFERTOS upon a microcontroller supported by a functional safety software package, such as the RX631 or RX63N, results in an embedded platform designed to meet the stringent requirements of IEC 61508 SIL 3,” said Andrew Longhurst, engineering manager for WHIS. “This significantly reduces risk and project schedules in safety-critical developments, freeing engineers to work where they add the most value – on the application.”

“The demand for MCU 'solutions' is becoming more prevalent as designs become more complex, and engineering time and resources more limited,” said Ritesh Tyagi, Senior Director of Microcontroller Product Marketing, Renesas Electronics America. “Integrating SAFERTOS with its Design Assurance Pack strengthens our Renesas RX631 and RX63N MCUs for safety applications, eases the development and safety certification process, and helps customers bring products to market more quickly and effectively.”

SAFERTOS is an IEC 61508 SIL 3 safety-certified Real Time Operating System (RTOS) that delivers unprecedented levels of determinism and robustness to safety-critical applications while using minimal resources. Used throughout the industrial, medical, and transportation sectors, SAFERTOS is supplied with a comprehensive Design Assurance Pack (DAP), supporting certification to a wide range of international design standards. SAFERTOS and its supporting DAP have been designed to reduce the cost of developing safety critical systems, shorten development timescales, and reduce risks with the certification process.

In addition, Renesas has developed a functional safety software package for use with its 32-bit RX631 and RX63N MCUs, which can be integrated with the Wittenstein SAFERTOS. This new MCU-based solution provides certified diagnostic software for the industry-leading RX CPU core and its internal memory, and a detailed Safety Manual to significantly reduce development time for designs that need to conform to stringent safety directives for industrial equipment, such as safety controllers, programmable logic controllers, industrial motor drives and safety sensors.

Part of the RX600 Series, the RX631 and RX63N MCU Groups deliver a combination of high performance, integrated safety and security functions, and up to 2MB embedded Flash memory, ideal for a wide range of applications in factory automation, building automation, smart meters, and medical devices that require integrated flash, connectivity, performance and low power.

SAFERTOS is available pre-certified by TÜV SÜD to IEC 61508-3 SIL-3 and is suitable for use in developments requiring certification to IEC 61508 and domain-specific adaptations, IEC 62304 class C and FDA 510(k) for medical, and DO 178B for aerospace.
