LAFARGE AND NATIONAL BUILDING MUSEUM TO SPOTLIGHT ARCHITECTURE STUDIO MARMOL RADZINER ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15

Co-founding principal Leo Marmol, FAIA, will discuss the firm’s non-traditional practice and its design-build approach to various projects, including Altamira Residence, Desert House, and Garcia House.

Chicago, IL, January 15, 2014 ----- Lafarge North America and the National Building Museum are pleased to announce that this year’s first “Spotlight on Design” lecture will be held on Wednesday, January 15, with Leo Marmol, FAIA and co-founding principal of Los Angeles-based Marmol Radziner.  The program is the second in a series of three “Spotlight on L.A. Design” lectures focused on west coast architectural firms to complement the museum’s exhibition Overdrive: L.A. Constructs the Future, 1940–1990.

Spotlight on Design is an ongoing lecture series that features architects and designers of distinction from around the world. Since its inception in 1997, the series has hosted many of the world’s premier design voices in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and design, including Pritzker Prize Laureates Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, I. M. Pei and Glenn Murcutt. Lafarge has been the corporate sponsor of Spotlight on Design since 2001.

Following the “master builder” tradition, Marmol Radziner integrates a full range of architectural, landscape and interior design services with a variety of construction capabilities for residential, multifamily, commercial and institutional projects. In recognition of its unique business practice and design excellence, Marmol Radziner was recognized with an American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Honor Award in 2000, honored as the AIA California Council’s Firm of the Year in 2004, and named in Architectural Digest’s AD100 in 2010. The design-build firm’s prefab division, dedicated to creating sustainable and affordable green homes, also has been recognized with numerous architectural and industrial design honors, including an International Design Excellence Award.

Leo Marmol holds a bachelor of architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University. He was elected to the distinguished College of the Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 2007 and inducted into Interior Design magazine’s hall of fame in 2009. As managing principal of Marmol Radziner, Marmol has extensive experience running a variety of residential and community-based urban projects. With a passion for mid-century modern architecture, he also has worked to restore many historic architectural icons in Southern California.   During the program, Marmol will discuss the firm’s non-traditional practice and its design-build approach that ensures projects are built to its standards, as seen in Altamira Residence, Desert House, and Garcia House. The lecture is scheduled for January 15 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the National Building Museum.

“Meeting the challenges posed by increased urbanization requires innovative solutions for building better cities with affordable and sustainable housing options,” said Maik Strecker, vice president of marketing for Lafarge U.S.  “We look forward to welcoming Leo Marmol to the National Building Museum and learning more about his firm’s thoughtful design-build approaches that consider comfort, sustainability and affordability with equal measure to redefine the concept of modern urban living.”

During the past several years, more than 30,000 people have attended lectures through the Spotlight on Design series, with audiences ranging from professionals, policymakers and students to the general public. The series also provides an opportunity for design professionals to achieve continuing education credits through the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System. Those not local to Washington, D.C., can access the lecture series and interviews with individual architects online by visiting the National Building Museum’s website at www.nbm.org.
