Architects Issue Statement on Capitol Dome Funding

Washington, D.C. – October 22, 2013 – For the first time since 1959-60, the U.S. Capitol dome will undergo a complete renovation to repair nearly 1,300 cracks and other problems on the cast-iron structure. The nearly $59.6 million project, set to begin in November, will take two years to complete.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) today issued the following statement on the extensive restoration of the U.S. Capitol Dome announced today by Architect of the Capitol (AOC) Stephen Ayers, FAIA. Please attribute to AIA President Mickey Jacob, FAIA:

“We commend the Architect of the Capitol, Stephen Ayers, FAIA for his leadership in taking on this major renovation of the most treasured worldwide symbol of democracy. Even in an age of government shutdowns and Congressional gridlock, the Dome still represents the best that democracy has to offer.

“The AIA has consistently said that repairing the Dome must be a top priority for Congress.  We are gratified by this announcement, and fully support a focus of resources on the many other government structures also in need of repair and maintenance.

“Investments made now in government buildings and infrastructure pay off in reduced costs and efficiency years from now. We hope that the announcement of a much-needed restoration of the U.S. Capitol Dome signals a renewed emphasis on this principle.”
