Minister Clement Underlines the Value of Open Data with Geographic Information Systems Experts

OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- Oct 22, 2013 -- The Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board, today told a major conference of geographic information systems (GIS) users that the federal government's geospatial data is some of the most valuable information available on Canada's Open Data portal, data.gc.ca. In addition, the Minister spoke of continuing interest and excitement in the repurposing of federal data to stimulate economic benefit and job creation.

"Esri Canada is a prime example of how government data drives technological innovation and how leveraging that data creates jobs and increases growth in all sectors of our economy," said Minister Clement at Esri Canada's annual User Conference. "Government-collected datasets are incredibly valuable in the hands of citizens. Our Government will continue to emphasize the economic benefit of Open Data by holding our first national appathon-the Canadian Open Data Experience, which will create user-friendly applications that will bolster Canada's economy," added Minister Clement.

Taking place early next year, CODE will challenge students, technology innovators and developers to use and explore the 200,000 some datasets from the Government of Canada's Open Data Portal, data.gc.ca, to create apps that find innovative solutions to real world problems.

"Open Data initiatives that have been spearheaded by Minister Clement and this government are critical for promoting transparency, accountability and citizen engagement," noted Alex Miller, President, Esri Canada, and member of the President's Advisory Panel on Open Government. "Publishing the wealth of public data that's available as online maps and applications allows it to be delivered in an easy-to-understand visual format, and in turn facilitates collaboration between citizens and government to find solutions for our economic, social and environmental challenges. We're delighted that our Government is taking such a proactive role in promoting the delivery and use of open data, and in particular geospatial data," said Mr. Miller.

Close to 300 people attended the event, geared towards experts in enterprise GIS solutions. These solutions help businesses, governments and educational institutions make timely, informed and mission-critical decisions by leveraging the power of geography.

On October 11, 2013, the Government announced its plans to launch the Canadian Open Data Experience: http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/media/nr-cp/2013/1011-eng.asp
