New York, NY-- The International Interior Design Association New York Chapter, (IIDA NY) has just announced the appointment of Steven South, IIDA, LEED AP as Chapter President. The IIDA is a professional networking and educational association that encourages professionals and industry members to connect. This chapter has been recognized as the IIDA Large Chapter of the Year for its continued effort to serve and deliver benefits and professional growth for its members, both professional and students.
South was appointed President elect in December 2012 and became President in June 2013. South is succeeding Hans Galutera, co-founder and principal of BG Studio International. “Mr. South was chosen because of his dedication to the organization and his drive for expansion,” says Galutera. “He is extremely passionate about the organization and we are excited to have him as our president.”
As a five-year IIDA NY member, South was already working as a senior interior design associate for Perkins+Will when he joined the organization. Throughout his career, South has executed projects on a local, national, and global scale and is currently working on projects with The New York Police Academy, Haworth Showrooms in Houston and New York, and Long Island University. Mr. South has also just begun teaching the Final Healthcare Design Studio at New York School of Interior Design. The course is part of the Master of Professional Studies in Healthcare Interiors, the only program in the US dedicated to this subject. “I saw IIDA as a way to give back to my profession and engage in other ways outside of work,” says South. “IIDA is a design-focused professional organization and I wanted to connect to like minded people.”
Each year, the New York chapter President is tasked with creating a theme---this year it’s #Creativestew. “The idea is to bring the power of design to transform, connect, and elevate,” says South. “Through outreach to different segments of the IIDA NY community, we will expand our presence within the State of New York.” Under South’s leadership, the IIDA NY Chapter will focus on growing our city centers creating campus centers in Upstate New York, and increasing exposure with educators and students. In addition to the #Creativestew theme, South is focusing on the creation of more satellite headquarters throughout New York that will report to the main IIDA NY Chapter. These city centers will allow IIDA NY to reach out to more interior designers and expand the network.

Steven South is a senior interior designer and associate in the New York office of Perkins+Will, a design firm with 25 locations worldwide. South has extensive experience in executing projects on a local, national, and global scale. His goal is to create spaces for clients that exceed their expectations that are unique and innovative in their completion.
His work has been published in national press such as Interior Design , Contract , Architectural Record , and also various trade and industry publications. Recently South’s work has been published in corporate interior design books. He has won awards from the AIA, IIDA, and other organizations and is a LEED AP. South is dedicated to public service, resulting in leadership roles in the IIDA New York Chapter as well as participating as a guest lecturer and critic at many academic institutions. South has presented to international, national, and local audiences on topics such as technology trends, sustainable corporate design, and healthcare design concepts.
South’s diverse background includes rehabilitation and interior design projects for corporate, retail, residential, educational, institutional, and historic preservation. Clients include the New York Police Academy, Johns Hopkins Hospital, COFRA, Anthos, Global Media Company, Haworth, Leftfield Pictures, Redken, and Kuwait University.
