April 19, 2012 -- The first event in a series of educational workshops has been hailed as a success by organisers 3D Laser Mapping. Attracting more than 50 practitioners and professionals from public sector organisations and commercial companies the workshop took place at the end of March in Kuala Lumpur. Delegates were presented with a thorough overview of data collection methods, explored data processing and extraction methodologies and were offered examples of real world projects.
The first ‘LiDAR Applications Workshop’ took place on the 28th March at the Royale Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and was organised by 3D Laser Mapping in partnership with local surveying company Jalal Johari Consultants. The one day overview workshop was complemented by a more in depth and hands-on technical session on the 29th March attended by practising surveyors.
“By offering attendees a comprehensive introduction to this popular technology we hoped to attract delegates from a wide range of application areas including highways design and maintenance, urban design, drainage, hydrography and mapping,” commented Jon Chicken, Managing Director of 3D Laser Mapping. “We achieved this and more! By offering educational content presented in a clear and precise manner supported by real world evidence we were also able to overcome some reservations about the use of LiDAR systems that were based on misinformation and past experience.”
Highlights from the two days included an ‘Introduction to LiDAR’, ‘Viewing and Manipulating’ laser scanned data and ‘LiDAR Data and Geographical Information Systems’. Examples of real world applications of laser scanned data that have achieved returns on investment included evidence from projects in the fields of transport, utilities, asset management and city modelling.
Feedback from delegates was very positive and future events are already being planned. One attendee commented, “Thank you for sharing this information … I now have a better appreciation of current and future LiDAR developments and applications.”
