Martin Davis Joins OpenGeo’s Team of Geospatial Experts

OpenGeo Hires 2011 Sol Katz Award Winner

New York, NY, October 25, 2011OpenGeo, the open source technology leader behind the OpenGeo Suite, has hired well-known software developer Martin Davis. Mr. Davis is best known for his core work on the JTS Topology Suite, he is joining OpenGeo during a period of rapid growth, and will be bringing his substantial expertise to the continued development of the OpenGeo software stack.

Mr. Davis has been a leading figure in the geospatial development community for over 15 years. His accomplishments include not only the development of the JTS Topology Suite, a project he continues be the primary maintainer for, but also his initiation of the JUMP Universal Mapping Platform, JCS Conflation Suite and RoadMatcher projects. These contributions were acknowledged this year, when at the FOSS4G conference Davis was recognized with the 2011 Sol Katz Award for achievement in open source geospatial software. This makes him the second Sol Katz recipient to join the OpenGeo team; OpenGeo’s Paul Ramsey was the 2008 recipient.

Remarking on the new hire, Senior Vice President of OpenGeo Eddie Pickle noted, "Martin Davis brings OpenGeo deep knowledge of geospatial software development, and his expertise in in computational geometry complements the skill set of our team and is sure to enhance the OpenGeo Suite. Like all OpenGeo developers, he’s a leader in his field. OpenGeo is serious about developing the core software we support, and with Martin joining our team we’ll be increasingly able to do so."

Prior to joining OpenGeo, Davis was the Senior Technical Architect at Clover Point Cartographics and Refractions Research Inc. He has also held various spatial analyst roles within British Columbia’s Ministry of Forests. Mr. Davis received a Bachelor of Science with honors in Math and Computer Science from Queen’s University.
